The fuel tank on my Mk1 3dr has a leak where the filler pipe joins the tank. I've been told replacing the tank is very fiddly. Anyone got an idiots guide on how to do this? I'm getting a tank from a scrappy.
cheers

Removing fuel tank
tbh dude.
your probably better off getting a tank from GSF or the like.
you dont want to get the tank home and find its got the same problem.
mk1's, 2's and 3's (maybe even mk4's??) are well prone to this so it maybe cheaper in the long run to just buy one new and smother it in sealant
any hoo. i dunno if this will help but if its the same as mk3 there is a strap that holds the tank in. soak the bolt for it in wd40 as its probably gonna be knackerd. undo it, un-hook rest of strap. then slide tank forward so its off the little shelf at the back and then it should drop down.
then you've got to get the fillerneck from under the arch. dont do what i did and leave the wheel on. much easier in the long run to jack it up put it on stands.
good luck with it dude

Thanks David. I heard the same from another source regarding buying new. Good reminder re: soaking the fasteners with WD40 - probably would have forgotten and sheared the damn thing.
