Imagine a scenario where everything that you've been doing for the past 6 or 7 years has been building to this point and, at this point, you would know if you were going to make it and become "a name".
Well today, all my efforts to achieve this, year upon year, have all fallen through. Every job offer that I have rejected because this point was coming has been a risk taken for nothing. All my hopes and aspirations for building a meaningful career and contributing something useful are now gone.
Words just can't quite capture what the impact of this is.
I've been to Tescos and bought ice cream - no effect (usually works).
I've been for an hour long thrash about in the Polo - no effect. I have, however, walked out of the office and will not be going back in the foreseeable future.
Wish my luck while I try to make the best of my small network and see if anyone's got anything going.
One absolutely gutted, Deek. All that work for nothing.
Could really do with some support here, peeps.
So, today I lost my job.

Deek, I really feel for you. That's a HUGE shock and I can only imagine what the impact must be.
Remember though that you HAVE made a career out of the time you spent in that job, and this can only help you find a new - and better - position elsewhere.
Don't think the time you spent building this was wasted, because it most definitely wasn't! It may be that you're not feeling valued right now, that's natural, but keep in mind that over the past few years you haven't simply been working for someone - you've in fact been making significant contributions to your field of expertise, and, more importantly now, you've been making a name for yourself.
When the initial shock passes I think you'll be able to see that more clearly.
And if you received job offers over the years, that means your skills are always required elsewhere.
So my recommendation is, go for long drive, think about your options (not only about jobs etc, but also maybe that long overdue vacation you've been planning...). Spend some time with your mates.
You're a professional whose expertise has been in demand and this is just a transition in your career.

What did they drop you for? Sounds like you weren't expecting it
Still, as others have said, if you've been working at that job for 6-7 years aiming at promotion, then you'll surely be more than experienced enough for another company to take you on, it sounds like you're just the kind of guy any employer would want with that much experience and dedication..

It's all a bit hard to explain, really. In my work (academic research), the further along you get in your career the harder you become to employ. Bascially, from a University's point of view you become more expensive and become increasingly specialised (reduced scope and flexibility) the further into your career you get. So, you have to work at making opportunities happen through who you know and insofar as the government will support you.
What happened today was the government cancelled my funding. Just like that. I still have some obligations to fulfil but then, that's it. It's not as if I've done anything wrong - if anything I was just on the cusp of getting recognised for what I've been up to.
So, if anyone wants someone who knows about value, people's judgements and cognition of it and their anchoring in their reality, please let me know - I'm desperate!
