Advice for 40K service

Right, my 40K service is due in the next 3 weeks and i've been expecting it to be quite expensive. This has been proved this morning when i gave my local dealer a call. The lady i spoke to quoted £265 parts and labour Am i getting skanked or is this expected. I'm sure i read somewhere else on the forum that it only cost them £200 and that was from dealers down South.

I'm not sure now, whether to go to a garage and let them do the work for me at half the price.

Advice please fellas. ASAP!

I paid £165 for 50k which is a minor service - 40k has a cam belt change, could be about right ?

I thought the cambelt was done at 60k? Anyway, I seem to remember last time I was in a dealers, there was a price on the wall for cambelt change which was over £200?? With the prices they charge for labour I'd be surprised if that was part of a service.

Why dont you pick a few other dealers from the vw website and give them a call, see how much they charge?

Might be worth you getting a last dealer stamp in the service book at 40k - people seem reassured by those stamps!

After your success with fitting the shifter you could always give it a go yourself next time?!

£200 down south, you must be having a bubble! I got mine done in London and paid just under £280!

Sure it's much cheaper up north...I thought Gilders gave a good quote...but don't quote me on that...no pun intended!

Just give a few stealers a call...and see what they quote you...be expecting to be around the £250 mark though...

Well i rang Hayseldens of Doncaster and they quoted me £210. £55 cheaper than gilders and its a VW dealer. I think i'll give some VW specialists a ring next week.

Well i've rang some VW specialists and been quoted between £130 - £160+vat. To be honest though, the guy who quoted me £130 sounded a little bit too eager for my business. don't think i trust his work.

I found something quite interesting out though. When i rang the Hayseldens in Barnsley, when they put my Reg into the computer, it didn't give them the engine number, so they couldn't give me a solid quote. He mentioned something about platinum spark plugs i think, which would mean the service would cost a little more The guy i spoke to though sounded a right nice bloke though and said he would check the Cam Belt Tensioner for us as i know some of you have had them fail before the 60k service.

Anyway i think its going to go in to Barnsley Hayseldens as they seem to be friendlier than the Gilders lot.

Hi you now dont need to go to your local dealers to have your car serviced to keep up with the warranty.

Service can be carried out by any garage as long as

1) They are VAT registered.

2) They stick to the VW service schedual.

3) They use Genuine parts.

This all came about with block excemption.

So the dealers really should start to bring their prices down to keep in with their customers.

Shop about is the best thing!

I've just had my 40k service and a cambelt change together and i paid £395 for everything, (i think i got a little ripped off to be honest)

I live in Dorset.

VW main dealers wanted £608 so i went to a VW specialist.

Definately cheaper up north, it always is!

Well I didnt' paid for that because I brought the car a month ago @ 43k on the clock. But from the service history and the recipt that the previous owner kept, he spend £570-580 on the 40k service. No cambelt change which is what i am worring about.. but had new front disc and pads, some extra work but dont know what.. LOL.. and the rest is the 40k insp service. Since I brought the car, I have had my 50k service as it was due. I went to the normal VW dealer, and they told me that for the next service, I will have to get front and rear disc and pad, = £350, , new rear bump stop = £150 , maybe cambelt = £170 plus the usual 60k service = £180 .... As you can see is a bit much to take.... But since all this have been flagged up, I was thinking may be I just go and fit some aftermarket parts... what do you guys think?? I mean saving up for £1k for my next service is actaully very scary thought!!!!

Well, i've been to Hayseldens in Barnsley for a quote and they have said £255 including brake fluid change maximum! They also said it would be £291 for a new belt and tensioners if i wanted them doing. Mmmm.

The thing is, i've also been to a decent car dealership that does MOT's and Servicing and they have quoted me £155. Now this dealership sell TT's, Evo's, Scooby's aswell as other really nice cars, so would sort of imagine they would be trust worthy to do my service. So i think it shall be booked in there.

P.S. You'll never guess what happened on my way home from Barnsley! I was shunted in the rear by a guy in a Golf! Not much damage, just paint work scratched and a 5mm dint where the recessed part for the number plate is. Gilders have quoted me anything upto £200. I'm sure other body repair shops will be way cheaper than that.

It seems that the cambelt should change in 40K to 60K, but would you mind to tell me it's talk about "km" or "mile??
My GTI is already 42000km now~
