Hi Guys,
I'm looking to buy a Polo GTi. Selling my 6N 1.4CL at the mo.
I was just wondering if there is any known issues with the GTi? Things that me and my b/f can look out for when looking at a second hand one? He does have very good mechanical knowledge of cars.
I will have about £5000 to spend, is that enough for a decent early model of is that still in the poor condition bracket?
Thanks

Buying Advice
I'd say ypu need more like £6000 to get a good example of one. Prices are continually dropping but you're gonna be struggling to find a decent one at £5000.
I'm not the best for diagnosing what problems to look out for but the main one is probably clutch and gearbox. Sometimes the clutch pedal may squeak due to a problem and sometimes it can be hard to select 1st and reverse gear.
Good luck on your search, and welcome to the forum.

There was a "safety recall" on the pedal box, all polo gtis should have had it done under warrenty. Make sure it goes into all gears easily and that the clutch isnt really heavy.
If you get one from a stealer your looking at about £6600 - £6900 for a reasonable one and you will get 12 months warrenty so if the gearbox does go you are covered. If you go private you are talking £6000, they are rare cars though and you have to remember its a GTI so its a bigger risk going private (as they tend to be driven hard). Other problems that i know of are cam belt tensioner wearing out early.
Dont forget about insurance too, its a group 12 so its gonna be alot more than ur current polo.
good look finding one, they dont stay around for long!
