Something Went Pop.....Help!!!

Post by gwbjs »

Driving along the road last night and under acceleration something went 'pop' and the car conked out. Although I could still engage gears easily (not the clutch then?) and get revs using the accelerator, the two things didn't seem to function together. Now when starting up the car I can put it into gear and let the clutch out without it stalling or engaging the gears. Also when in gear a beeping alarm sounds if you press the throttle.

I am pretty worried that something big and expensive has happened and was wondering if you guys had any idea? Could it be the Pedal Box Thread (although all the pedals seem to work fine).

Spoke to VW and they said it sounds like the drive shaft is away, but would this not make a horrendous noise? This went on my old 205 gti and I thought the engine had fallen out it was that noisy........

Anyway, am getting it picked up by a local garage to check it out first but if its the Pedal Box Thread then I'll be straight down to VW to get it done under Re-call.

Any help or advice would be really appreciated. Typical that my warranty ran out a month ago............. :(

Just had a call from the garage to say that it was the centre CV joint (i.e. not the ones at each wheel) that had disintegrated into 10 bits. luckily only costing £100 fitted for replacement which ain't bad........

Anyone else had this problem or could I have found a new one..?

Sorry to hear about your problem, to be honest it's the first I've heard about this problem but I certainly hope it's just a one off and not a new problem for us GTI owners to look 'forward' to!

Anyone else had this problem? I assume because of the cost it wasn't done at a VW garage?

Got the Polo back yesterday from my local garage after they had replaced the internal CV joint and have to say the car is now fantastic! Before the problem, it was well noisy on acceleration and I was getting various knocking noises when releasing the clutch, particularly at low speeds. All this has now dissappeared and the car is silent (and pulls a lot more smoothly funnily enough). All for the bargain price of £105 including labour. My guess is the same thing would have been at least £250 at VW..........

Anyway, if you guys experience any of the problems mentioned above, it may be the same thing. Rest assured it's not that expensive though...!
