Speaker Wiring in a Mk2

Hello all,

I've posted something similar in the ICE section, but I'm looking for a more mk2 specific response.

I've just recently fitted my new head unit, and I used a brand new, colour-coded ISO connector from Halfords. Problem is, I now have no rear-left speaker, and the centre speaker now works (I didn't realise it was there until it started working!). I don't understand why it shouldn't work as the connector is designed to just connect straight in and sort everything out.

I'm guessing that there's some suspect wiring in the car's wiring harness, so if I start bodging it I need to know how to wire the centre, because it's neither left nor right (if you know what I mean).

Also, if I start putting speakers in the car, can I replace the centre speaker with an aftermarket one? (size would be useful)

All speaker holders in the mk2 are designed for 6"x4" speakers, any aftermarket ones will fit. Think they're the same size as the golf mk1 if you need to cross reference anything. KarlCL_Coupe is selling a set of speakers atm in the for sale section, they look reasonable, might be worth a try

I can't say much about the wiring because i just used plastic connectors (the ones with screws) instead of an iso connector. As for the speakers, i bought a pair of MB Quart speakers, which i found out later were high end speakers! They produce awesome quality sound and they were for a very reasonable price.

I got them from ebay, they are called MB Quart DKD 146.

Hmm. I'll consider that for a later date.

If I'm going to modify my wiring to see if I can get the rear-left speaker working, then how should I wire the front-centre? Should I use the Right-front wires or the Left-front? (or can I use both otherwise I only get half the stereo sound out of it)

Although my front speaker is missing, i believe you only need to wire either left or right, since it's mono.

Ah right then - but surely if the output of the headunit is stereo then I'll only get half the sound?

Split the wire and wire it into both left and right, it'll produce a mono sound out of the combination of left and right stereo channels.

remember that it only had 3 speakers so that connecting block will be missing a speaker

you need to find which of the 3 wires are the rear speakers and connect them to the rear speakers on the connecting blok
