Brake Discs

Post by cyhliu »

Chaps,

I've just had some Pagid FR pads fitted and whilst they were fitting them the chap said that I would need some new discs...preferably as soon as possible...

Is there any way I can tell myself whether the discs need replacing? I think they are running the standard discs and have never been changed since new (mileage is curreently at 46k), I've heard somewhere that having the pads and discs changed at the same time is better as it will allow the pads to bed in with the new discs, rather bedbing in with the old and having the change all at a later date.

I'm thinking if the pads need changing then the discs will also...anyone else have any views on this? Or am I asking a very silly question?

If either disc requires renewal, both should be done at the same time, same of course with brake pads - do them in pairs (back/front)

Im not sure what the thickness should be, but you can measure it using a micrometer and inspect the disc to check for any warps or a lip formed due to excessive wear

Perhaps take to another garage or two for their opinion on it

I had my pads done recently (mileage around 55k) but the discs were not even mentioned and I asked about the rust etc.. on them, but that is fine

Hope helps

used haynes manual for research, hehe

These should last at least 60,000 miles or more depending on your braking. But, if you've had non standard pads, then they will wear quicker. The outer lip on a disc is a good indicator of wear, but you can file this off - garages don't like doing this, so they fit new ones so that they can fit the pads easier.

So, I would suggest that all the garage is doing is making less work and creating more cost. I had a previous car with discs that were 130,000 miles. The brakes still worked fine.

If you look at the disk itself there will be a lip on the outer edge, the bigger it is, the more worn it is. I think anything over a 3mm and u should change em.

Its handy if u change disks and pads at the same time, mainly cause u already have the wheel and caliper off. But if u bed ur new pads in with ur current disks it will only take 250 - 500 miles for them to bed into a new set of disks (assuming the lip on ur current disks isnt huuge)

It would have been better to change the discs with the pads, that way your new discs will not eat your pads. The wear limit is determined by the minimum thickness. Am not sure what it is on the GTi, might be the same as mine.

I am looking at changing the front discs, and I have done 38k, I will wait until the pads need changing.

Generally the discs thin more at the edge than the middle, because its faster than the middle, if you see what I mean. This means that new pads don't touch the outer part of the disc until they bed in. But when you fit discs and pads together they are both squared up, which is better, but you will wear your pads in one shape, then fit new discs and wear them in a different plane again. Not ideal.

If your discs do not have a significant step at the edge (like 3mm) then I would leave them for now. A small lip is normal. If they get too thin the first thing that is likely to happen is that they warp, or suffer from brake fade earlier. Its not often the disc fails unless it gets really thin.
