Rear axle alignment

Post by GroovyCarrot »

Is it possible for the rear axle to be misaligned? Just, I noticed today when I was checking over my new tyres that the nearside rear wheel has acres of clearance, it's practically trying to go into the middle of the car, whereas the offside rear wheel has just about enough clearance to get by. I've never had a rear axle off before so I don't know how it's fitted, but is it possible for it to have been mounted a bit over to the right?

there is probably 1 or 2 mm of adjustment in the 6 bolts that hold the pivots on the car. You could try adjusting them but the bolts are threadlocked and very tight. none of the cars ive had have had perfect allignment. Ive always had scrubbage on one side an not the other (never both) so if its not causing any problems with the new tyres youve got then its probably not worth worrying about

Well, haven't had enough of a load in the back yet to make really sure.. it just shocked me quite how different the two sides are. One side looks like it'll just clear, the other one's got about an inch and a half of clearance. Fingers crossed though that it won't be a problem with the new tyres though.

that sounds like quite alot of clearance the inch and a half side. maybe its had a bump and the stub axle is bent? On my gt and my mk2 theres a few mm either side max.

No signs of rear end accident damage, and I haven't noticed anything bent under there, but I'll check it out next time I find a reason to go under the car. Hope it's nothing like that :? Might just be an excuse to find a GT rear axle if it is buggered though :D

Groovy, can you post a picture of it from the back so that we can have a look at it too?

Will do when I get a chance. It isn't that noticable most of the time, just if I stick the wheel up on a ramp you can see it has an awful lot more clearance one side than the other.
