High pitch Noise

Hey guys,

Yesturday when i started the car I could hear a high pitch whinning sound comming from the engine, as the revs increased you cant hear it as loud.

It sounds like a loose fan-belt but its not as screachy or as loud. After driving for about 20mins It went away.

This morning I start the car it does the same. Anyone know what it might be?

Could it be the starter motor staying in?

Have the same prob after replacing my camshaft belt...

Starting to think it comes from the alternator...

Oiled it a bit but no luck.

Its audible more during idling and it comes and goes when starting to rev the engine, until it disappears at higher revs...Does that ring a bell to you ???

Well it's annoying AS HELL !!!

Come to think of it...it goes on for some msec AFTER i turn off the engine..Sort of like a squicky wheel still turning for a while...

And it seems to get louder when the engine is hotter...

God damn it i just replaced the cam belt...What NEXT...

Yep, I had this - usually when cold starting.

I put some molydenum grease (lightly) on the thick belt for the alternator etc. This cured it.

Seems to be a common problem - the belt drys out in the heat, and then when cold, it looses grip. Someone said they roughed the belt up a little to make it grip. WD40 also seems to do the job, but I don't like that stuff as it can make rubber perish.

Well i was about to try some WD40 i happen to have handy...but isn't that stuff supposed to LUBRICATE???

I mean what happens if i "oil" the thing and it makes it slip like horsesh*t??

Is tha noise actually the belt slipping??Sound more like rotational whistling...

P.S.I think i saw some kind of spray for the belts...Hmmm have to recheck...

We've had this thread previously... seems WD40 does quieten down the belt slip - the belt slips because it is dry, not cos it is wet - it you look at your belt, I bet it is dry. Anyway, we checked this all out and I found that grease actually worked well. The belt still grips as its tensioned.
