GTi - Some niggling problems...Help?

Post by diablo_red »

Hello all

Picked up my GTi last Saturday and I am pretty happy with it. A great little car all in all but.....

A few things have been bugging me though:

1. I sometimes get this annoying rattling sound, particularly at lower speeds or over rougher road surfaces. I thought it was the plastic trim above the main heater vents. I have tried pushing it down but the noise is still there. It sounds like it is underneath the central console unit but sounds 'plasticy' rather than mechanical. Just v annoying at times.

2. I have a small dent on the passenger side just above the skirts on the side. VW say they have tried to sort but it is in too awkward a place. Would the 'ChipsAway' company be able to sort it an if so how much. I get the impression VW have not tried too hard on it.

3. The Boot handle - The paint around the top is not great. Not sure whether it is corroded or just wear and tear.

If anyone can shine any light on these probs that would be great.

Cheers

First of all Welcome to the forum, always nice to see a new face, and a new GTi

Id say your best bet for the noise inside the car is to get a passenger to apply pressure to area's of the dash and doors while your driving and when the noise stops you know where abouts the problem is. May just be a loose screw of something.

As for the dint, there are loads of companies out there who specialise in removing dents without cracking the paint so id say this is your best bet. About £30-£40 per pannel i beleive is about right so shop arround.

Lastly, My last polo's boot handle did the same, I would just get a local bodyshop to respray it. Remember if you take it off yourself it means they dont have to and so you save money. £10-15 for that id say.

Hope this is some use.

I had an annoying dash noise from the middle air vents. This came about after the VW Dealer pulled out most of the dash due to the peddle box recall (which I would presume you've had done as its from a Dealer).

Not much you can do about it really except remove the bottom covers and tighten up the screws holding the dash up. It made some difference to mine, but not much. Once taken apart, VWs never seem to go back together the same way again.

my rear boot handle is exactly the same also, i had a quote of £50 to do it. (that was them dimantling it too)

so i guess £30-40 if you do that part itself.

The guy i know is charging more because i know he is a perfectionist, and he will do a cracking job. (ive seen his work).

£50, well i blow more that that on a Saturday nite out!!!

Cheers for all the advice ! :D

The rattling noise was there before the recall. The pedal box was only done the other day so it is not a result of that.

Should have mentioned it to the dealers when I took it in but was more concerned with some other 'issues' which they have now sorted.

Cost of doing the paintjob and the dent seems quite reasonable but its finding someone who you trust to do a good job that is the hard part! :?

Thanks again
