As standard, which very few seem to be:
116 bhp (140 bhp/tonne)
111 lb/ft
8.6 seconds 0-100km/h (0-62.5 mph)
123 mph top speed
I imagine if you've been watching G40s slaughtering VR6s and S3s you're watching modified cars, I know a few people have gone past 200bhp with their G40s.
Edit: Oh, and insurance group 15, I think.

As for performance, this makes interesting reading:

Taken from VW Motoring, February 1997, p. 30.

A GT has a 1272cc multipoint injected engine, a bit like the G40 one but with a high compression ratio but no charger, sodium filled valves or any of the uprated bits needed for forced induction (reasonable sized list). Plus it's got different suspension (25mm higher), has a different interior, no beesting aerial, solid brakes same as the lower models (which is scary stuff) and doesn't have the G40's BBS alloys either.
Makes 75bhp, 73lbs/ft torque and hits 60 in 11.1 according to VW, but most owners report better performance than that as standard, usually about 10 seconds.
Mine has 84bhp and 85lbs/ft torque but the engine is soon to make way for the fettled G40 engine which is in pieces in the garage.
They're good little cars, but the problem is even when you're having fun driving it you can't help thinking "yeah, but a G40 would be quicker". I find that anyway...

Licence endangeringly fast. No Porsche 911 turbo, but still facking rapid.polosilver wrote:Exactly how fast are these things?
They also eat up all, and I mean ALL your money as you either have to fix/repair bits that wear and break, as well as spending on the much needed power increasing mods.
I've been without mine for over a month now due to a dead gearbox, and it's made me really grauchy. Uni exam stress was often aided by a quick thrash in the G!

Why do they not do anything like the g40 now? Id love to see something as fast brand new! I recon VW gunna have to step it up a bit with the 9NF GTi, they got the 182 clio and Fiesta ST to compete with now!
1.8T 9NF Polo GTi me thinks!
Phill.
G40s are pretty rare up here, ive never seen one b4, or i have but they dont look special enough
