1.9 TDi Sport - whinning gearbox/diff

Post by cjdriver »

Anybody else with a 1.9 TDi Sport had this problem - a whinning noise from the gearbox/diff, seems worse at 40MPH in 4th gear when gently cruising along.

Hi chris i`ve never noticed this on mine, what mileage has yours done? I take it it`s still under warranty if so i`d get it into the stealers to get it checked over

Dazza,

I bought the car when it was 3 months old @ 1000 miles, it has had the whinning noise ever since I bought it, I initially thought it may be normal but now it's starting to bother me. I'm now at 8000 miles. It will be due for a service soon so I'll get them to check it out.

There are a number of other jobs I want them to do:

1. Check the diesel pump bolts (recall)
2. Check the rear parking sensors which don't seem to work
3. Difficult engagement of reverse gear
4. Drivers side rear door panel unclipped at bottom.
5. Tailgate has to be slammed for it to latch properly

My car makes a whining noise that get's louder as RPM rise, loudest with 1st and 2nd gear when revving from 2500 until 4000rpm. Someone said he had a similar problem with his 1.9 tdi (I have 1.4 tdi) and it was due to low spec gearbox oil fitted at factory. After changing to fully synthetic oil the problem was gone after the oils had settled. I'm not sure if this would help but I'm going to mention this at next service along with clonking ARB bushes..

whinning gearbox/diff

Post by daveD »

hi to everybody i am a bit of a newbee to uk-polo.i have been an avid
reader of this forum for months and thought it about time i should join and am the proud first time owner of a 1.2 polo.
Anyway back to the gearbox a friend of mine has a 2003 plate 1.6 Golf which he has owned from new and he had the same problem whinning gearbox and difficulty in engaging 1st and 2nd.He took it back to the main dealers and they said, the car had to be run in for x number of miles
Well the problem didnt get any better and the fault was becoming abit of a liability,So he toook it back on more than one occassion and the main dealer just kept turning him away(not enough miles) Out of desperation
he rang VW who told him to take the car to another VW dealer 10 miles
away.He wasn't to happy about this, but out of desperation he took it to the other garage. The technician took the car for a test drive booked the car in there and then gave my friend a curtesy car, told him to come back to-morow which he did.Low and behold the problem was fixed. My friend asked the technician what he had done.Just changed the oil for the synthetic stuff, its a cmmon fault on VW ,said the tecnician.Weather that is true of the Polo i dont know.but it worked for my friend.Hope this helps

Sorry to resurrect this old post ... :)

But im having the same problem as cjdriver has had, mine seems to whine in 4th and now 5th (in the hot weather) at about 40mph and somtimes (clonks) which seems to come from the end plate on the gearbox (with the car jacked up.)

Does anyone know (or can anyone confirm) if this could be oil related or something more sinister.. :?:
