Chipping the Polo TDi

Got Upsolute in my Passat tdi estate, 0-62 is 9.7 seconds (measured with VAG-Com). Standard is supposed to be around 11 seconds. I've also measured 40-65 times in third, and that comes out at 5.1 seconds.

Now, a lighter Polo should scream off the line (assuming you can keep traction), and might even be scary in the wet

This time of year though, you would be hard pressed to keep the smile off your face...

In my opinion, chipping the car for acceleration is one thing, but the mid and upper range grunt is what makes the driving experience so much better

There is a 1.9 Golf near me that does it. I think it's the 100 BHP, not sure.

I think it's something to do with the back pressure on the re spin of the turbo, but it does sound really nice

Are you thinking of a turbo dump valve? The valve that lets the pressure out of the turbo system when you change gear so that it's not trying to spin on low pressure. You can change these on some cars (although I don't know about VW's) and they often make a high pitched air release noise as they activate. You hear a few Imprezas with these fitted.

Fun at first, but bloody annoying later I reckon.

The dump valve business typically only works on Petrols, due to the way the system works.

I don't think the diesel systems work in the same way, and so you are unlikely to get much of a sound, other than a very quiet pssshhhhtttt similar to a bike wheel puncture

Leon, no it wasn't a D/V but I know what you mean. The sound is kind of like a cat purring sound (a bad example I know) but I think it's more related to the air filters or wastegate

Have you tried putting a playing card on one of your suspoension struts (held on with a clothes peg of course)?

Always worked on my raleigh chopper

Scorpio1,

I'm sure once you get your Polo you'll be more than happy with the sound the turbo makes and you won't even consider upgrading it's performance, until you get used to driving a Diesel.

It's weird to say this but it's a totally different driving style, no need to thrash your car anymore to get performance, no need to drop down gears to overtake anything on motorway inclines and no reason to take it to the redline.

I'm sure other mods can be employed to accentuate the sound the turbo makes, possibly a performance exhaust!

It sounds good to me Des! I have always wondered what a performance exhaust will sound like on a diesel.

I know what you mean about not having to thrash it around though, saw an old Golf 90 bhp (silver TDI badge) and had problems even trying to keep up with the thing with 170 BHP, so I imagine it will be fun having the 100 BHP in a Polo shell!
