Chipping the Polo TDi

I'm just glad the 1.9 TDI is out. The 1.8T sounds very nice, but from now on I want (need) good economy with a nice bit of performance.

It's ashame they didn't have a 130 TDI Polo, but Â£500 or so sorts that out.

Saying that, the new Polo GTI will be probably be the nicest thing on the road since the McLaren F1

Â£500? I take it you mean more than just a chip then. My chip was Â£300 all in, and made the world of difference to an admittedly hearse-like Passat.

Maybe I was thinking of the tuning box? Not sure..

But a nice induction kit maybe too, to hear that induction sound

You don't really need to change the filter kit. The standard airbox VW make is more than adequate, in most cases it has proved more efficient than direct replacements especially induction kits.

Just drop a K&N panel filter in there to help it along it's way. I'd love to chip my car and I've been quoted Â£600 25% increase in BHP and Torque and 5% beter fuel economy fromAmD but Superchips quote around the 30% increase for both BHP and torque - problem is you then need traction control and you also put your warranty into jeopardy.

Have you tried revo chip from fontain Iver? Â£499 plus you get a free 5 hours trial, just hope they work for Polos!

I don't think you need traction control for an extra 30bhp?

It's not the extra 30bhp that's the problem, it's the extra 30lb+ of torque.

The 130 tdi makes a mockery of the standard VW traction control so imagine what it's like without it.

Especially in the wet

Des, you're right about the torque being the issue, although not at the wheels.

Your clutch takes a bit of a hammering, so with must of this style of upgrade, you should factor in an upgraded clutch too...

Not sure that a panel filter is going to help matters too much either. The jury is very much out as to whether the oiled filters eventual mess with your MAF... that could be another Â£200 if it goes west.

Add to that the fact the there's a turbo spinning away there, and you would need an especially badly caked filter for it not to get enough air through the system. Most of the guys I've spoken to and the evidence from dyno tests show little to no increase in power with a k&n on a 130TDi.

Sorry to pee on your parade, but this is all things that I've had to consider since Upsoluting my Passat.

Mind you, the fun that can be had as you spin your wheels in third is something else...

The thing I wanted most from the updated air filter was that purring kind of sound you only get on turbo cars when you change gear.

There is a 1.9 Golf near me that does it. I think it's the 100 BHP, not sure.

I think it's something to do with the back pressure on the re spin of the turbo, but it does sound really nice

That does seem good, but I am worried about clutch issues and long term reliability issues etc.

I will install the 'other mods' first, and perhaps in the new year look at tuning it. More black smoke might be a worry though

It could be where the air is forced back into the turbo and is "chopped up" by the turbine. Sounds good, rally car stylee even! But infact stalls the turbo (not good if you're just about to boot it again!!) and doesnt do much good for turbo life either!
That is if it is what I'm talking about, I may be talking rubbish here!

That's what I should have ordered, ESP

But wonder what a chip would do for 0-62? Another thing I wondered is, where can we find out the figurers for the 30-60 MPH times? It's not in the 2004 brochure or the 2003 one I don't think..
