doesnt work like that mate. wider alloys means you can handle a slight bit better and you could have pushed the car past its limits thus causing an accident.
they'l laugh at you and tell you you're not getting any money at all.

Personally i would be declaring that. some insurer may be funny. what if your car gets broken into, ice stolen and then burnt out?
the reason they did it in the first place was to steal some stereo equipment. police will know that and it'l be reported with the incident and the insurers will realise what the reason behind the theft was

its best to cover your back 100% so the company cannot back out of a payement

fair shout, easiest thing to do is just declare EVERYTHING i suppose.

i disagree with the comment that they dont like to insure people in fast cars, becuase a 55bhp 1.2 isnt fast! but i understand what you mean.

cheers guys

They won't pay for anything as your insurance would be voided is my understanding of things (feel free to correct me KC)
yeh your right pal, the whole policy would be voided, and cancelled back to inception and they will leave you in the lurch...
it will be in your documents where it will say something along the lines of... "You have to inform us of any changes and modifications to your vehicle"

Liverpool victoria used to be ok with mods last time i checked, they arent really bothered about body mods (suspension/alloys etc) but anything to do with engine they will ask about power hike - i.e % of power you gain

Uberrima fides

is a common term used insurance meaning "good faith" this means that all parties to an insurance contract must deal in good faith, making a full declaration of all material facts in the insurance proposal. so declare everything as any changes how trivial could render the current insurance contract void.

Unfortunatly, a lot of people who drive 55bhp 1.2's are unwilling to accept that.

It would probably cost more to get it rolling roaded than it would put your premiums up lol
