This is it on the lupo engine, it looks exactly the same. green sensor on the right hand side of the engine:
held in by a clip, and when pulled out is followed by a shed load of coolant, so get make sure your engine is cool, you've got the new one ready, and the new one has a seal also

ah cheers tim. Think this is the cause of the problems i have. il give it a change and hope it makes a difference

I was a bit eager when I did mine. Got home from VW and pulled the plug out straight away. Was a bit shocked when boiling coolant pissed out everywhere, no damage done though...
You need this:

some replacement coolant.

You shouldn't need the latter. The temp sensor comes with a seal, and you can use the original clip
