If that's a worry, I think QuickFit do a service where if it's not *degrees cooler, they don't charge. Not sure of the terms on that though, but could be a way to test it if you're careful?

My understanding was the compressor would run regardless though, and running out of gas/lubricant is what damages them.

The system must have a minimum amount of pressure or the compressor won't run to protect itself as the gas is also a lubricant.

Thanks for that mate I will have a look into that too!

Yeah thats what I thought might be the case, had the car since october so never really had the need for it, getting a bit warm now though so would be good if I could get it working.

I'd get it regassed. It's supposed to be done every 2 years so is probably long overdue.

Hi Guys,

Finally got round to having it re-gassed today with no luck, compressor doesnt kick in, does this mean I defiantly need a new compressor?

Thanks for any responses

2004 polo, 1.9tdi sport.

I had the problem of my air con (and fans) not working, the compressor was 'apparently' not engaging, i had it regassed and it still didnt work, ......the centre of the compressor pulley remained stationary while the belt driven outer pulley rotated.......i was told by 'experts' that my comp' was u/s and that i needed a new one!........it turned out that i had the newer 'clutchless' compressor fitted, meaning that the inner and outer pulleys were fixed and were meant to always turn together, even if the a/c is turned off!!........the on/off operation of the compressor is controlled by an internal solenoid at the rear of the compressor. I then removed the inner pulley and discovered that a rubber/plastic coupling that was attached to the outer pulley had 'stripped' and wasnt driving the inner pulley. A used complete pulley from a breakers yard solved the problem, nice cold a/c now, and fans working!... :D

Glad you got yours sorting mate, mines proving to be a right ball ache, the compressor will work if i take a direct feed from the battery too it, used the diagnostics on the climatronic told me I had a supply voltage fault which i cant seem to track down, also I found the connector to my cooling fan connector was broken and not actually plugged in!

I wonder if its your fan control unit thats faulty?, whilst trying to sort mine out i read somewhere that the 12v supply to the clutch compressor is from the fcu (mine is a different system without the compressor clutch)

The next thing I think I am going to try is a new FCM, I now have 0 fault codes on the climatronic now last thing I can think of what it might be really
