I'd recommend removing the plastic footrest, affixing the metal cover to it and then replacing.
It makes it so much easier to line it up and allows you to use bolts rather than rely on self tapping screws into the plastic.

The footrest is affixed by a single plastic nut at the top. Unscrew using a proper hex bolt screwdriver adapter as pliers will mash the head up, but it may even come off with simplefinger pressure. There's 1 or two lugs (Can't remember which) at the bottom of the footrest, so one the nut is unscrewed pull the yop towards you, it will hinge from the bottom and then come out.

Replacing is easy, locate the bottom lug/s and hinge forward to the top, replacing the plastic nut.

All in all 5 min job. Simples.
