CORRECT OIL GRADE FOR POLO GTI

As I think that I said earlier, “502” is a very old VW Group oil spec, 19+ years old and a lot has happened in engine design and servicing/use age since then - also there have been leaps made in oil “design” to better protect engines and improve MPG, so why would VW ZA say 502 is what to aim for?

Now without being silly, maybe, just maybe, as a sales territory, ZA in general has not taken on board newer oils, but I’d doubt that.

As a minimum, I’d aim to only ever use 504 or even newer but do check before using the latest oil spec. Where to check will probably be on the website of locally produced oils.

Also as I said earlier, SEAT Leon Cupra, at least 2019 models, have a sticker that advises 504 though initially I’d expect that 0W 20 will have been the oil filled at factory, what dealers use in UK is anyone’s guess, remember typically Fuchs has the factory oil supply contract, Castrol only have the aftermarket contract, ie the right to put their name on the oil fill cap and so encourage the use of their oils to the owner, dealership workshops will have their own group contracts for oil supplies.

Not rocket science, just hard to get a simple and easy answer to a simple question it seems.

The one thing I'm sure of is that our fuel is not the best in the world. Sure we get 95 unleaded which works well for most engines but also means ZAR cannot get the new Focus RS, for example, because our fuel is not "clean" enough. Not sure if that has anything to do with the different types of oils used here but there you go.

Received this reply today from VW SA:

Volkswagen of South Africa (Pty) Ltd. does not prescribe one brand of oil
over another. We also do not specify different oil viscosity for different
temperatures.
We suggest that the oil complies with the specifications as outlined in the
owner’s manual and printed on the oil container:
Engine VW norm number
Petrol VW502.00

This totally contradicts VW UK claim to use 508.00 standard which is 0W-20 Grade.!!
I am none the wiser.

Does Polo's manufactured for SA market have PPF fitted, if not this might explain different oil grade compared to EU?

VW dealer comfirmed that my 2018 Polo GTI has 0w20 oil type. Not sure what brand, but they recommended 0w20 Castrol Edge IV LL full synthetic for toping up. I have now 19000km and added 250 ml.

Do you mean your gti has an oil consumption 250ml??

You mean that you have for 19.000 the same oils? i think my friend that's very rough for a turbo engine... I will follow 502 norm which is 5w40 magnatec professional. And oil change every 10.000 not 15.000 the time will tell us. Generally i think that when you have oil consumption in a new car something goes wrong unless you had track day and the rpms where in redline for too long!

Rough? Neah, I choose to follow the instruction and recommendation from the car, manual and dealer. 0W20 seems to be a great formula. As you said: Time will tell

It's completely normal to have the same oil over 30 000 km when on a variable interval maintainance schedule. In fact the manual will telle you to change oil every 30 000 km or 2 years. And when necessary your display will tell you to have maintainance earlier.

Yeah i agree with you the dealer and the manual are these who decides. This happend to me too. I follow the dealer's and manual's instructions which tells that for Greece must be used 502 5w40 oil. So do you think that a new car with only 19.0000 its ok to have oil consumption?

Are you on long life service to have gone 19000km without a service? 250ml oil consumption in 19000km is negligible.

Oil consumption on a new car depends a lot on how it has been run in and how it is driven long term. If you do some very long journeys at relatively high speeds, you're likely to lose some oil through evaporation - having a sustained high oil temp over 3 or 4 hours of continuous use on a single journey. If you run your car in on motorway miles and have glazed bores as a result, you can suffer high oil consumption. By high, I mean maybe a litre of oil every 2000-3000km.

I would say that my car used no oil between new and its first service (10000miles/16000km) but as the difference between min and max on the dipstick is almost a litre, I wouldn't have topped up 250ml to top of dipstick again just before a service.

I'm going for long life service but I'm not worried about the oil consumption. This type of oil is supposed to be consumed, is low viscosity and full synthetic, you can read about it. The oil dealer will use will be 0W20 Castrol edge professional IV LL. I wanted Mobil 1 0W20 ESP but seems they give me no choice. Porsche Macan with the same engine (different turbo and intercooler though) use Mobile 1.
Indeed the car is driven 50% of the time in a sportier manner (usually the overtakes are executed with the pedal on the floor, overtaking a lorry is taking a bit over 3 seconds ).
I'll keep you posted about this, especially if the engine will blow up

When you objects in my opinion that you have oil consumption you could try 504 5w30 which is in your manual too. Oil consumption isn't usual. The engine is safe if you top up with oil when need to but can you imagine where is going the burned oil? I will tell you opf, catalyst system, turbo and pipes will have filthy burned oil and the troubles will come. But these are my opinion so i wish to you the best.
