As re. Learning ECU's, nowadays its not just the expensive stuff that have them, both my last car Mk5 Golf GTI and the Civic Type R both had them, and so could take advantage of improved performance. I'm not sure on the Polo but if I ever get a chance to find out I'll have a look.
With re. Tesco's Super Unleaded the component that boosts the RON level is a Biofuel component and I always noticed a reduction in performance and economy when using it compared to other Super Unleaded's.
I used to use either Sainsbury's Superunleaded (97 RON) since it was only a penny or 2 higher priced than their regular 95 RON, or alternatively Shell Optimax. However since they released V-Power they changed the difference they charge between Normal 95 and V-Power to 7p per litre, which when you fill up for a tank of say 40L is almost £3 difference, compared to the 5p which although still a little extortionate means another £1 difference on a tank, for 1 extra RON which is only based on additives.
At the moment I'm using Asda 95RON and an Asda Credit Card, which knocks 2p a litre of the cost. I reckon even this is ridiculous 99.9p so anything that reduces that is a bonus, so meaning 97.9p -> about £1 off every tanks worth, on a tank which is on the cheaper end of the high costs at the moment. When and if costs ever come down I'll consider using a few tanks of V-Power or whatever because of the detergents included, but I think its daft to be paying about £5 more for fuel per tank at the minute when 95 RON is so expensive.
With re. BP Ultimate from what I remember the 2 times I filled my Golf with it, it felt really good, even though the RON level was lower than V-Power (97 I think vs 99), it ran really well. But BP's Prices are very high and their stations tend to be where they can milk the most money out of you. If I had a car where it'd make the difference I'd be interested in what the 102RON version of BP Ultimate does

well i filled up with shell v-power today (is that what its called?!). managed to get 44 litres in!!
i'll see if i can notice a difference over the next week or so...i'm not too convinced it will make much of a difference to be honest!!
107.9p per litre meaning it cost me just over £47 to fill up. whats the most anyone else has ever spent on a tank full for their polo? surely cant be much more than that, my tank was nearly empty!!

The problem with Super Unleaded's is if you were going to notice a difference it would be over a few tanks, not just one.

I use BP ultimate most of the time, if not that then its texaco high octane or tesco 99 ron
