Im guessing that that engine is a GK lump. 1272cc, 75bhp 11:1 compression ratio. Never made it over here though. Im guessing thats the standard airbox setup for the GK, it vaguely resembles a GT setup without the airflow meter.

Isn't that the engine from the european mk2 GT? If so, I don't think that's it.. that's a mechanical engine, the GT didn't come until they were on hydraulic heads.. and that looks very much like a carb under there rather than a fuel injection setup.. could be wrong, that's just my thinking..
I'd suggest you take a look on ebay.de to see if anyone's selling them, german ebay's the place to look for odd bits like that

Something else just caught my eye.. LHD brake servo.. mmmmm... power assistance... Must look into modifying a mini remote servo one of these days..

mk2matt's had a few GKs...they were found on some very early MK2s.

Where can I get a GK engine from? how is it 20bhp diferent to the MH 1.3??
Is it to do with the manifold???

How come the germans get a bloody better engine than us? - i was gutted to find out that my car was only 55bhp [not any more though 'HAHAHAHAHA'] but i still want more power!! how can I get it up to german speck??

They put in the MH because they were concerned about having 75bhp in a severely underbraked car.

What makes the GK what it is? whats special about that engine because it still runs a carb i take it. And yes Tahrey 1043 I am perfectly aware that my polo coupe S originated from Germany

Also you say GKs were found in early mk2s, in this country?

From readying Gareths post I have learnt that the compression ration is 11;1, is this the difference- if I get the head ported and polished and achieve this compression ratio will I see 75 out of a standard 1.3 MH??

We didn't get over 55bhp in the uk for a couple of reasons.. first there wasn't really a market for 'warm' hatches at that point, and second the brakes are dangerous with 45bhp, let alone 75.. european spec cars at least had a brake servo.

If you want 75bhp, I'd suggest the best way to go about it is to get a cylinder head from a mk3 GT, and all the wiring / ECU / fuel pumps etc to match.. I don't know much about altering compression ratios, but I would imagine it's not going to be the easiest thing to do..

There is a mechanical headed engine with 75bhp and the GK is it, wether its classed as a GT I do not know. There are some coupe S's on C reg that have mechanical heads (someone off porka called munsta has one. And also there is a mk1 GT:

so I can only assume that this is the mechanical headed mk2 "GT" engine.

as for getting from 55 to 75bhp: (MH to GK) better cam, better carb and induction system, and higher comp ratio.

Oh, mr grovy, when did I say it was fuel injection?

You didn't, sorry, I assumed you were talking about the euro spec fuel injected mk2 GT's, I never knew there was a carb version - thought the extra power came from the injection
