Howling Noise!

On my Polo Coupe, when i operate the fan heater, on ocassions when driver side cold air vent is operated, I get a sort of "hollow" howling sound. It only happens occasionally, but it is most off putting as it can just suddenly happen when you are driving and it scares the daylight out of me when it does.

I relate it to the drivers side cold air vent, because on an occasion when i closed it the sound stopped and it does seem to be coming from there.

I thought initially it was the fan rotor string something or the motor seizing, but i have noticed that the fan still proceeds at full blast despite the noise. It is a hollow sound as if air is passing over something - its hard to describe.

Anybody help with this?

probably just got something stuck in there mate, so your self diagnosis is quite accurate

or it might be the fan motor bearings squealing, as they have every right to on an older car

I suppose something might be stuck inside, which alters position due to air pressure, giving rise to this wierd sound. When it starts its like an express train going through a tunnel, as best I can describe it ! Doesn't half make you jump !!

Don't think its the bearings, the fan seems quiet enough when this noise stops, even at full whack!

I only had this noise again after a period of about four or five months??

Its not that regular. I'm hesitant to take thiings apart in case i do some damage. Is it easy to dismantle the fan assembly, ducting etc ?

ive got a screaming noise that has come and gone a couple times since i've owned the car (2.5 years) - doesnt seem to have hurt anything

Hmmm, I've only had this car six months or so and although this noise occurred a couple of times in that period, other than it being "scary" it doesn't effect the operation of the car - only the driver
