Try switching your lights on and then using the front windscreen washers. Make sure that no one is standing near by!! :D

Heh heh yes they are quite powerful!

Russ, as our GTis have got xenon front lights, its an MOT requirement that they also have an operational high-pressure headlight washer system, so yeah they are standard. Like VR6 South quite rightly points out, they don't fire unless your lights are on, so get a mate to operate the jets whilst you stand and watch, or vice-versa

Welcome to UK-P chap :)

just to add that they also don't operate if the washer fluid is low, so make sure its got over a litre or so in the tank

Post by jimed29 »

is that true about the MOT requirment??? does that mean that if you fit aftermarket kits your car will fail its mot? even if the bulbs are in a standard reflector headlight and not a projector like on the gti? if this is true then its stupid cause what differance is there between a hid bulb and a filament bulb in the same fitting? does anybody know?????

I believe that the European legislation on HID lights is that the car must have headlight washers and also a auto levelling / self levelling system fitted to the headlights. Both reasons are due to the extra brightness of the HID's and to stop dazzling oncoming road users. The self levellers to stop you dazzling due to extra weight in the rear of the car and the washers are required because any film of dirt over the lens can defract the light beam off course causing it to dazzle.

I take my GTi to a small garage i know when it comes to the MOT......Had the chaps foxed for a minute when they first turned the lights on and tried to find the leveller.... Then one of 'em realised they were Xenon's and told the other guy it didn't have a manual leveller.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Dave.
