New polo

hey all, i was jst looking 4 a few qns answered. As i wrote off my mk3 Gt im looking @ getting a new car. The courtesy (spelling) car i got is a '54 plate 1.9D Polo, and although its nt the fastest thing on the planet the more i look @ it the more i like it. So i was considering looking in2 buying 1 but i dnt really no much bout wot sort of engines & trim are available? Also i was wondering about wot sort of prices 2 expect 2 pay?

Any input is much appreciated.

your 1.9D one is the slowest car avaliable across the new polo range,

heres just a quick summary of the new polo:

entry level engine 3cyl 6v 1.2 55bhp is a engine,
followd by a 1.2 12v engine giving 65bhp. torquey engine
then 1.4 16v 75bhp, has been said to be "lacking torque" (pls dont take offecnce 1.4 16v 75bhp ppl)
then 1.4 FSI 86bhp up to date technology
then 1.4 16v 100bhhp sport model

now the diesels
1.9 SDI (the 1 u have just now, pretty sluggish)
1.4 75bhp TDI, VW underestimate this engine, logistix on this forum has tested it on rolling road - 91.4hp...
1.9 100bhp TDI
1.9 130bhp GT TDI

really depends wot insurance you can afford up to, for trim level, go for a "S" or a "twist" trim or above, they have air con

, central locking, electric windows etc.

as for prices, the mid range "twist" is a very good buy IMO

thanx 4 the info carmadaaron, dats really helpful. Im nt sure wot sort of model iwood b able 2 go 4, all depends on how much Â£Â£Â£ i can get ma hands on & wot happens wif my pending insurance claim.

Aaron just to correct you the Polo SDI is acually 64 bhp that means it is ONE bhp slower than the 1.2 12v at 65bhp.

Torguey engine??? So does that hole 1 bhp make a difference? The SDI isnt the slowest polo across the range it is actually the 1.2 robz

Torquey i mean compared to the other petrols, the 1.2 12v 65bhp model has better acceleration than the 1.4 16v 75bhp, which has been said to be "lacking torque" because it peaks higher up the rev range, therefore making the 1.2 12v 65bhp model quicker off the mark to around 35mph.

IMHO, there are 2 surprising engines in the range.

1) 1.2 12v. You'd think a 1.2 is going to be slower than a snail. Try one, you'll be very surprised at how torquey it actually is. Oh and it sounds like a Porsche

2) 1.4 TDI. Yes it's a diesel, but it's a cracking engine. Again, you'll be very surprised by this engine, and they chip/map up to 100bhp

if you don't like either, try the higher powered engines and see how you get on with them.

Oh and I hate to throw a spanner in the works, but what about the Ibiza? 02 plate 1.2 12vs can be picked up for Â£3500 now!!!

yip, fully agree with Toxxin here, the two surprises in the engine range, havent driven the 1.4 TDI but according to logistix on this forum, with careful chip, induction and performance exhaust, it is possible to get it to GT level, 130bhp from a 3 cyl!!!

did the early Ibizas have the creaky suspension problem though? the polo did, so its wise to pick up a two year old or younger car, so those niggles can be replaced under warrenty.

If you were to buy from a dealership you would get a 12-month used car warranty thrown in by default

I haven't been in an Ibiza that doesn't have creaks. The creaking is actually the rear brakes, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

If you buy from a dealer you're paying a premium for that. You could buy a late 02 plate or early 52 plate for Â£4000 and get all the problems ironed out under warranty

I have the 1.2 12v and wasn't expecting anything from it, thought it would pull like a go-kart, 1st test drive, and I was very pleasantly surprised, haven't seen a graph of engine curve, but there's a nice peak at 3,000. It does sound great once you get it above that, real throaty rasp, gear box is a bit noisy IMHO, going to add a BMC filter soon, (as soon as I can work out how to get at the bloody airbox) so hopefully slight increase in power and more noise.

yea, i would like to see the torque curve too

BMC filter? let us know how u get on.

thanx 4 ebodys input. Im really nt sure wot model i wood consider, cos although i mainly drive in & around town ill def want something that can be a bit fun 4 M'way use ect.

obv Â£Â£Â£ is the main prob, the likes of the 1.2 is the sort of price range i can afford but i think something like the 1.4 16v, 1.4TDI & 1.9TDI wood be pretty good. tho the 1.4 TDI is prob the mst realistic option 4 me
