I'll give you a fiver and a packet of pickled onion monster munch for it!

Driving aimlessly round the fields of the (leicester-, nottingham-, derby-) shires post-exams, in the lovely sunshine and cool breezes, seeing all the flash gits in their TT and merc drop tops, i got to thinking how nice it would be to have one as well.... and a bit of car-surfing* closer to home confirmed that. Not really for long distance, or for show, but just something to jolly about in and enjoy the open air without having a roof above or relying on the teeny portal of a sunroof.

=looks at the poppynail= .... hmmmm...... if only i had an angle grinder :D

* car surfing, in this limited sense: there's a rural road down my way that's been diverted and very nicely straightened & resurfaced thanks to the tender mercies of the M6 Toll running smack over it's former route. Said road now sees no traffic anyway as it all goes different routes due to various other restrictions (no right turn, etc) put on one end of it - literally, in two years i have never, ever seen another vehicle on it. This, and it's very open, one-mile-visibility nature and wiiiide soft verges makes it ripe for lots of pratting about. Enter one end of it in astra, idling in 5th downhill around 20-25mph, windows open. Climb out. Sit on window ledge steering with knee like you're some kind of crazy wind-rider or summink. Then stand up and lean over the roof, steering with foot, only climbing down when within 100 yards of the stop line (going uphill at about 15mph at that point). It's somewhere between cycling and hang gliding, but without the effort... maybe a bit like driving a convertible 4x4. Anyway, it's coooool, man, and gives some limited convertible thrills to the hardtopped.

how the hell do you steer and press the accelator pedal whilst leaning THAT far out of the window?

you dont!

it's idling in 5th :D

and the tray has what would be, for a polo, a ludicrously high 5th gear (though i am very tempted to do it a 6-speed conversion... the ratios on the LC would pretty much match that in mine, with a change of final drive, and 6th would be just right for easy cruising at max torque around 75mph)

so it can trundle along around 20mph at a regular idling speed, and because it feels like it's got a flywheel the size and weight of a small elephant, it'll still run reasonably smooth at maybe 500 revs....

(and, thanks to it's rather eager pseudo-choke (what DO you call it with an injection engine?) it can be a good 30 when cold! dont know if that's "useful" or "scary"!)

and seriously, i don't know if i'd have wanted to be accelerating in that position anyway. steering was unexpectedly easy, but i wasnt going really any faster than i could have comfortably cycled down there.
