Turbos... Anyone help?

I drove a 1.4 TDI sport today and it actually felt noticeably slower than the 1.9TDI. The thing I wondered is, is the turbo on the 1.4 and 1.9 of a different size? Because the 1.4 sounds different to the 1.9. I mean the bigger engine has a 'proper' whistle. Are they different :?:

I don't actually know, but maybe the bigger engine breathes more air, therefore making the turbo work harder and spool up quicker???

just an idea.... Image

The 1.4 and 1.9 turbochargers are different, the 1.9's turbocharger is part of the manifold, its also obviously bigger...

Also, for those interested the ATD (engine code) version of the 1.9 has 100bhp, the AXR 101bhp

Right... I’m going to sound very thick here  but where is the 1.4 turbo connected to then?

So I take it the 1.4 has something like a T.2 and the 1.9 a T.25?

Would like detailed info of the engines but the VW site doesn't have it and did searches to no avail

:(

Don't suppose anyone found out did they?

The VW dealer told me the 1.9 TDI is exactly the same engine they fit in the 1.9 100BHP Golf.... Same turbo too...

Well found out a little more on a website, so I thought I'd post some info up in case any other TDI owners out there are interested.

In the newer PD TDI engines, a variable vane turbo is used.

Apparently it's just the size, boost pressure, and ECU mapping that pushes things up. They're supposed to be good for 80,000 miles + with no problems if not abused too much.
A couple of pics:

I was rather hoping they'd be good for 160,000 plus.

Anyway it's almost impossible not to use the turbo, it kicks in at around 1600rpm.

I just hope it gives off a nice whistle!

Bit similar to the Golf's, cutting in and out, as a pose to it being there all the time like on the small engines. Opps I’ve embarrassed myself now!

Oh, you'll hear it alright. My special trick is driving along in third/fourth and spinning the turbo right on the power band then let it spin down and back up again, childish for a 30 year old I know.

But very satisfying.
