I havent got one
In my 1996 key there isn't an imobilizer. I have a little seperate thingy for the imobilizer. I know on the newer models there is an imobilzer chip put in them as you have to have a key code put in it or it won't open your doors or start the car.

??
I would have thought that there is no imobilizer in it, but don't hold me to that.
You could try prizing it apart and seeing if there is a chip in it.
If I was you I would go and get a non-VW cut and see if it works. (It probably will). But if it doesn't then you have only lost about a 5'er. Where as VW will charge you a hell of a lot more when you probably don't even need a genuine one.
