really funny raspy revving sound, give it a try

Post by tommy »

rite, really funny, last night when tuning my radio in i found this radio station, it makes the sound of your car revving when your driving, the noise comes through your speekers and give a raspy noise. you can also hear your electronics, including indicators, this is well funny!!!!!!!!!!

tune your radio into Long Wave 153 and rev your engines!!!!!!!!

GIVE IT A TRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LW and MW are both AM signals, you should still be able to pick it up if you tune to AM 153.

used to do this when i still had the old blaupunkt in, and the aerial down (doesnt work so well on the sony, or with the aerial extended for some reason)...... good laff as it sounds somewhere between a moped and an f1 car :D
good for judging the revs with a lot of road or wind noise, a la mk2/3 ;)

you have to turn it up a long way though! would be good with a sub i reckon

at its best in tunnels btw and it doesnt matter about the frequency *so* much, just tune up and down on LW or MW til it's nice and loud. (which is another way having the aerial down in a tunnel can help - no other stations)

Hmm, so I wonder what the receiver is picking up then? Possibly EM interference from the dizzy?

not sure but i used to think it was just brief RF "clicks" from the ignition leads as they fired... they're releasing a split second shot of about 250,000V after all, which produces a quite powerful (if local) EM burst if not properly choked - which i doubt it is in polo HT leads. All those clicks together make the buzzing noise, but they're a bit more discernable at idle.

When I had the old tape stereo (Philips) in I managed to get some interesting noises when tuned on LW whilst activating the electric windows. :?

what i want to know, is what's causing the massive and fairly specific FM interference on the radios at work ..... FM's supposed to be quite difficult to cause cross-talk on due to the nature of the signal, so something's putting out a powerful amount of radio signal at broadcast frequencies, probably FM'd itself for some reason.

only *slightly* worrying...

jeez its been ages since i listened to anything on MW or LW..... probably because my main radio is next to the PC lol

hehe yup we found this a long while ago, but didnt think anything of it cos it was in my mates dads old merc, and thought it was to do with the shodiness of the car (well it does have a fuel leak)
For greater effects a) throw the car in reverse and b) leave it in neutral and rev
