I own a 1 litre mk2. So far I have been beaten by polopowah's 1 litre 6n2, along with pretty much anything else I try anything on with (apart from a mk2 gti once, but I vowed never to drive so stupidly ever again..)
1.0's simply aren't a good thing to go racing in ;)

Got that right :)

My old 998cc Mini was great around corners and really fast up to about 20mph if you hooked up your start right  but the only times I beat other cars would have been when they were laden down with passengers and/or caravans :P

The GTi is a little quicker...

you'd be surprised what you can thrash in a 1.0 polo ....... mostly because other people can't drive or are scared of putting the pedal to the floor, but sometimes because of sheer bad performance and the surprising perkiness of the engine when you get it right (it's got a poor power-per-litre, but it's not anywhere near as peaky as many others)

1.2 novas and corsas are pretty naff performers as it happens (even worse power per litre), i think even the modern 1.0 corsa (newest shape) can outrun them (*just* leaves a mk3 1.0 behind). still its a good feeling to outrun a chav trying it on in one of those :D

is yours the 1043 or the 999? if it's the former in the heavier shell then you can up your boasts further on each "kill" in comparison as you're 5hp short :D

a mk2 1043 should be able to neck and neck with a 75bhp pug 1007 (just released - seeing the performance on top gear, its shocking), the mk4 will be slower but shouldnt be *too* far behind.

for the record, mk3 1043 (probably similar power-to-weight as a mk4 999), has killed: Several white vans and mini-vans (escort, astra, etc), though generally got *just* pipped by merc sprinters. Those things are FAST (for vans!). A surprising number of Volvo T5s, and i dont mean cop ones (the one that was a cop proved impossible to outrun). A few corsas, saxos and the like being twattily driven (not trying to race, just leaving the nob behind as i didnt fancy being near them), and even a Sierra Xr4x4i ... guy behind the wheel did look like he'd been sniffing glue however.
And though I didn't often keep much of a kill tally, it loved to play with Beemers in the outside lane of the M6, M1, M42, etc.. Holding its own until the embarrasing points where some 69mph dawdler pulled over to the middle lane right at the bottom of the hill, passing the role over.
The A55 was good as well, even if just because most people passing along there were sightseeing - flying past so many in the left lane with such a dinky engine was quite a buzz. As was scraping the doorhandles round all the roundabouts (hey, they're still technically under a 70mph limit..)

Mind you as i've stated too much, that behaviour was the near death of it. I can't beleive how much crap i've removed from the pistons (including the sides, from blow-by) and the head... or the state of the big end bearings. To get any speed from it unfortunately requires full throttle and the top 2k of the rev band...
...and in busy motorway situations, an assload of undertaking and occasional combative driving, which for some reason i'm doing a whole lot less of in the 'tray. Not sure why. Might be because i don't need to conserve momentum quite so much as before :D (anyone who causes you to drop below 4500rpm is, naturally, a complete bastard and deserves to die)

edit: Aw, groovy, and you with the 5-speed box too...... (mind you according to the official specs, 5sp is slower to 60 than the 4!)
the mini's power is, a bit like the 1043, in the torque more so than the peak BHP... but even more so. it's almost a diesel.. get it into 2nd gear as soon as you feel the power falling off and dont redline it :D ..... or ever, ever lift off.

i used to own a 1.1L pug 106 and that thing would fly!

Was so light as it had nothing in the way of comfort lol

Would beat everycar off the light up to about 30 where i would stick to the limit and they dont.

Yep ive still got my 1.1 106, it bloody flys, feels so slow compared to my 1.9 diesel polo.

Its got 65bhp (rolling roaded) and weights next to nothing, plus has plently more gadgets them my polo, but it falls apart 24/7.

I used to able to thrash 1.4 corsas, 306, polo's, 1.2 puntos, 1.4 fabias no prob, now i have no chance, but in the diesel polo, its not about speed so its not so bad :P

Ive got a 1.0 6n with a zorst system(which makes no difference but makes people with poor polo knowledge think its a 1.4) and i have beaten a 1.1i saxo,1.3 fiesta mk4 i think it was and a 1.2 punto, all driven by young lads two of which are my mates, so yes the cars were being thrased lol.
My mate used to have a 1.1 106 quite old one (the one wit only 4 gears = reverse) and that was well quick for its engine size always beat me of the mark, again i think its down to power to weight ratio as it hardly weighed a thing.

Its odd that you beat a saxo, because the saxo is more or less the exact same car as a 106. And i used to beat my mates 1.4 Polo in the 106 :S

Ive driven a 1.0 polo and tbh i wasnt impressed, its the slowest thing ive ever driven it might of been a crap one tho.

Im just sayin that ive beaten a 1.1i saxo.
All cars are different, my mates 1.3 fiesta is a slow fiesta because it has been thrased and it has bodykit and etc on which looks ok but doesnt improve performance, this saxo could have been a thrased saxo etc, i have another friend at college with a 1.1i and that is fairly quick however we have never raced but when ever driving somewhere behind him i can always keep up !
Surely any 1.4 engine would beat a 1.1, regardless of its make ?
But i do agree with u on the fact that a 1.0 polo isnt the fastest thing around but when were talking about low engine sizes its more to do with the styling and the looks of the car rather than performance and i think that the polo is a nicer looking car than the 1.1 106.
I leave the racing to the big engines, 2.0 plus !

i had the 1.0 litre 98 model, and it was slow

very slow.

although, for a 1.0 litre it did hold it's head up high in terms of torque.

Vw polo 1.4 is still 60bhp though, where as a 1.1 106/saxo is lighter and up to about 65bhp.

Tho im sure if you raced a shagged 106 and a good polo 1.4 the polo would win.

And your right, the polo does look alot better than a 106 (refered to by my mates as a shed) lol

Another thing you have to concider is the driver, if the driver is pish then u have a big advantage.

My mate got a new Mini Cooper and cant drive to save himself (fluffs up the gear change etc) normally i would get totally blown away by a mini cooper, but i managed to keep up with him, now he has learned how to change gear tho :(

Buy a 106 gti if you want speed, buy a polo gti if you want speed and comfort, quality, decent spec and safety.
