Hi chaps. Just picked up my second 1.3cl coupe last week and I've been having some problems. Major headache is the gearbox. I've been running the car to work and back and its been fine. My girlfriend borrowed it at the weekend and the car dropped out of gear in fifth at motorway speeds. It then would find a gear in neautral and neutral in some of the gears s its definetly a gear selector problem. Had a quick look at the gear linkage at the gearbox end at the weekend. There is a little axial play in the rod (maybe 3-5mm tops), is that normal? I've got another gearbox I can swop into it but wanted to check that there wasn't a possible problem the gear lever linkage end before I wasted my time. Anything I should check first?
Any help much appreciated.

you mean when you push the rod left to right there's play in it? you need to try re-centring it then putting some threadlock on the bolt and in the connection & tightening it up
mine came very loose which led to me getting stuck in 3rd & 4th
might also want to check your GB oil whilst your at it as low levels can cause problems in 5th

Check that the linkage is tight and correctly adjusted - Haynes gives a rough guide to setting up the linkage, but I prefer to do it by feel. If you can select gears nicely with the engine off, then you can probably assume that the linkage is fine. Whip the gearstick gaitor off and check that the bush in there is still intact too.
If all that checks out fine it may well be knackered internals. I've had very similar symptoms when the selector mechanism got bent (and later jammed - with diff teeth...). Fingers crossed it's just a linkage problem.
If you do fill the 'box with oil, undo the upper fill bung on the side of the 'box casing above the passenger side output flange, and top up the oil through the speedo drive hole. Stops you overfilling it that way.

I mean there is play length ways. There is a join just behind the gearbox and the shaft (linkage) that goes into this can be pushed in or pulled out about 5mm without moving the selector shaft on the gearbox. I've been told this is probably fairly normal but I'm not so sure. I didn't get a chance to look at the car last night but I'll investigate the other things mentioned as well. Thanks for the help fellas.

my linkage has loads of play in it aswell.
but, due to my polo having dodgy gears when i bought it (sounds similar symptoms to your situation...)... all i replaced was the rubber bush that you can see if you remove the gaiter. its the bush that goes over the rod as it passes through the cars floorpan.
mine cost me about £8-£10 for a new one from the £tealers. just was a bit of a pain to fit it as you need to undo the 4 studs underneath the car (underneath the heatshield for the exhaust), which will have most certainly rusted through with age by now.
when you take it all apart i would reccomend making some form of marking on the two linkages where they meet, to make life a 'little' easier when you come to check the gears can all be selected.
