Post by tainmrk3polo »

i think my fuel pump may be shot! its making kind of grinding noises, it only seems to do it when im kind of low on fuel though...... if it has gone, is this the right replacement part?

presumably you mean the one in the tank and not the one the other one? Id just get a lift pump from a scrappy if I ever had a dodgy one but then Im a pikey. I doubt its £100 new anyway.

Yeah if you've got dodgy noises coming from your tank it'll be the lift pump, these are about £20 from GSF and aren't multipoint specific so you don't have to worry about getting the wrong one. Pray it's this that's at fault, which it could be as the noise is in your tank.

The in-line fuel pump (that's presumably what you have a price for there) is more expensive, but is located behind the driver's side rear wheel.

Looks like this (you may have seen this before):

Should make a humming noise which you can hear if you wind the window down. It's not in your tank though.

The pic shows a multipoint and a single point pump next to each other, they look the same! From VW the single point one is £120 ish, the multi point one is almost £180. I think GSF do the multipoint ones for £120 though. Even cheaper if you have a discount card.

im not really sure where hte noise is coming from, its coming from the drivers side at the back but couldnt tell you if its the inline or the lift pump this sound file is recorded off my phone, you cant hear it too well on here for some reaosn but its really clear on my phone. i sat the phone on top of the rear drivers wheel and turned the key on and off a few times and also held the phone away from the car whilst revving it and stuff:
the like whining noise you can hear that almost sounds like mic interference is the noise im on about, tis hard to describe its more of a whining noise than a grind...... and matt- so if i ran out of fuel its possible that may of killed it? cos my fuel gauge isnt too accurate and it said i was above the red and then i was driving along a few weeks back and all of a sudden it dropped into the red and it started misfiring and cut out so its possible that did the damage?

ps yes my car does sound chavvy with that stupidly embarrisingly loud exhaust on it but thats what happens when you decat a powerflow system- it empties the contents of your centre box and back box osmewhere down the m6 at 120..........   still it has a proper nice burble to it!

edit oh ffs! its gone all realy poor quality and you can make anyhting out, the noise about 3/4's the way through the third one is probably the best description! and yes it sounds like my cars misfiring but it isnt, its just loss of quality somewhere laong the transfer through mms from my phone to my amtes ot the email off his phone to my computer downloaded to my hdd then uploaded to my FTP space.

take the bottom half of the rear bench out and take the plate that covers the lift pump off too. then do the key on/key off thing again with your head close to it. Im pretty sure youre tall enough to do this.
