Yeah, I think there's an oil seal on the shift rod that quite often goes. Whatever you do don't let it run out of oil :?

Oil as specified in haynes, think it's 75w80? Check before you take my word on it though. The fill / drain plugs are on the side of the gearbox. Right side of the gearbox from the front of the car, there are two big old plugs with 17mm hex heads, one's the fill, the other's the drain. You'll need a bit of hose and a funnel to pour the oil in.
Might be worth doing an oil change while you're fiddling about there, the gearbox oil will be pretty degraded after all these years.

would be extreamly wise to change the oil :P

after finding a gearbox in the scrapyard and draining the oil me and dad realised it was the best thing we could have done

80w90 mate. good time to do it is the summer as the stuff is really like toffee in the winter... (or more appropriately, lithium grease ;))

allegedly - in the other gearbox post (or three) it's worth your while seeing if you can pour it in thru the speedo cable hole. open the top "filling" bolt and fill thru the cable hole til it oozes out the fill hole.

(as ever, make sure the top bolt can be undone and replaced before touching the lower one!)
