Settle my dispute...

Post by MadManMike »

Hi guys,

Can you settle a long running dispute for me please?

Right, my friend has a 1.4 3 door Clio RT (Old style) and reckons he has 85 bhp as standard, and does 0-60 in 11 secs. Now my other friend had a 1.4i Corsa, which had 55 bhp standard.

Now what I want to know is the 0-60 time of a GT mk3 Polo and the correct BHP as standard. I am SURE it's got more BHP than the clio and a better 0-60 than the Clio, I think my friend is just a bit immature and always wants to be the best which is a bit sad.

So, can anyone settle this?

Right, as I thought, 75. So what has the Clio got? I'm sure it's only the multipoint injection 1.4s that have 85 hp?

I'm sure a normal 1.4 can't have that...

He's cut a hole on the bonnet and put an acrylic screen to look at the dirty engine     Silly boy!

If it's done ok it could look good, but his engine is a mess!

If you look on carstats.co.uk it says the 1.4's up to '97 have 80bhp, and 98 onwards have 75bhp

but I think there are more versions than it states

well, the 75hp coming from the GT is made by only 1272cc's, so a 1.4 could be 80-85 quite easily.....

i did get a lend of an RN once, the 1.2 one with somewhere between 60-70hp. Felt almost as sprightly as the 75hp punto i drove before & after. bit lighter in the body of course, but still it was 5 door... RT 1.4 should surely be noticably faster, paritcularly if a 3 door.

not a bad car, bit tinny, but a nice drive, fair bit of poke at the bottom if not actually "loads".

I've had the misfortune of meeting both of the above cars (not your mates ones obviously) at the lights and can confirm they end up in the rearview very quickly...the clio is faster than the corsa though.

last week was a red mk4 polo with mahoosive exhaust and chav behind the wheel and his mates in a xr2i and a renault 19 summat or other..all were loud all were displeasing to the eye and all were behind me very quikly lol.

although i tried it with a c2 vts and got wasted :-D

I raced a turbo diesel Escort estate once in my old 1043CL, and won

But it was bloody close! :D

The GT is surprisingly quick, it has the habit of catching you unawares and beating cars you wouldn't think it could! VTR's don't seem to be a problem up to about 60mph, although I think it depends on the driver too.

I'm borrowing a l reg astra estate at the moment 1.7d (turbo intercooler) oooooo..and off the lights an asmatic slug could win but once your moving it seems rather nippy.

The whistle as the turbo wakes up is kinda fun too.

P.s Tahrey can i be in your gang for the next 2 weeks now i have a GM :-)

lol yeah ... but you better not go embarrasing me by shooting off with all that diesel POWARRRR
(cant you just slip the clutch something chronic in 1st or whatever?)

actually at the mo im letting the astra sit quietly while i get an appointment for a service & cambelt change sorted (one final stamp for the logbook :D) on it, and trying to put miles on the polo. so you could convoy to some show but it would have to be about 45-55mph..
