Boost pipes
hi guys im looking into getting a g40. ive seen a few though where people blank of the port on the top right of the charger and take the hose off that runs through the rocker cover to the throttle body.
why do they do this?
cheers

thats the boost return pipes. bit of a controversial subject about g40's. jabbasport leave them connected, pitstop prefer to remove them
Means you have a chirp like a dump valve when letting off the accelerator
I have this done on my g, but instead of blanking it off, i have a second air filter down in the drivers arch.

u read my mind but.......
hey guys i just bought a g40 n to add a question to wat the guy originally posted,
it has had the retain pipe taken off, but i herd u need to oil the charger with PFTE - hope that correct spelling! - why is this and does it have to do with any thing about engine oil not going in the charger cos u took the pipe off??
ck

i think people like to leave them on as it has the crank case breather in it! the oil vapours from that go into the charged and help to lubricate the internals! the downside to this is that it lowers the octane level of the fuel you put in as the vapours travel through the pipes and into the engine!
i'm in two minds to do mine, i want the churp noise, but don't want the chargedg to suffer!
PTFE is the correct spelling, i've heard of a spray stuff, would that lubricate the charger instead of the oil vapours?

churp noise
can i replace the pipes with no modification to anything else? would i have to reprogram ECU????
cant i get the churp noise from using a dump valve???
thanks, ck

It isn't difficult to remove the pipes and the additional power should be noticable as the mixture is more potent as well as being cooler with the fresh air rather than recycling the waste that has been warmed whilst passing through the engine.
The chirp from the waste gate sounds cooler than a dump valve.
If you don't want the chirp from the waste gate you can use a silicone pipe or equivelant and direct the pipe straight down to dampen the noise.
There has been people who have used a catch tank with a replacement silicone hose from the waste gate to the top of the rocker cover so that the boost return is still in place without the oil vapours.
I have been told by many different people that blanking the charger is a good idea, more so than twin inlets as mine currently has. The oil vapours and other small particles that get drawn into the charger due to the design of the boost return can supposedly create a grinding paste that can effect the seals and scroll which means that a more frequent service will be required, especially if a smaller pulley is in use.
PTFE grease will be needed to lubricate the charger and needs to be in form of a spray, preferably silicone free for some reason. This should be applied every 500 to 1000 miles with normal use. Dependant upon frequency of use you may need to lubricate more often. i.e. my charger now has problems as the charger has not been lubricated well enough and has been driven hard, this was with the boost return on, the car sat for months then was driven hard to sit again for months and driven hard by the previous owner. The top bearings are now at fualt and were before I bought the vehicle.
You can get an oil catch tank and use it to collect the oil and the vapours that the boost return used to generate, or you can vent to air.
Jabba do not promote the removal of the boost return saying "it is there for a reason and only adds 1bhp with twin inlets." I did not ask Jabba about blanking the charger off.
PSD said that it was a good idea to blank the charger due to some reasons above.
I can not garuantee the accuracy of this information as I have been told different oppinions and reasons, these are the most common reasons/answers to the question that I asked Jabba, PSD, RPM, friends and people I have met or spoken to that have oppinions on this modification.
Sorry for the essay, if I am wrong in any way then please feel free to inform me / slate me

nice info
yer i can see how the debate is forming now, id rather have 1 less BHP n have it so it gets oiled rather than have to keep manually lubricating it!if its a job where i can just shove a pipe back on ill do that.
also do u know where i can find some PTFE grease from as all i can find is some crappy bike chain oil with silicone in it "EEK!"

Don't buy PTFE grease from Halfords - it's not the correct stuff at all! I can't stress that enough! The stuff that PSD use (and sell - they have lots of cans in stock at the moment) has specific lubrication characteristics and working heat range etc. You risk damaging your charger if you don't use the correct stuff.quinny wrote:I think JoeG40 said he got his from Halfords, I am unaware it it contains silicone. I am pretty sure that PSD sell silicone free PTFE grease though.
