Long Lost Treasure!

Post by Tahrey1043 »

Today's been a good day for it, so I'm just interested in what unusual things people may have pulled out of the woodwork after having them sit a long time out of sight, and out of mind...

Today I have been witness to...

At work:
* Forgotten packet of space raiders in cupboard. Total result of a lunch :D
* Having a big tidy-up & tidy-out as it's dead during holiday season, and both the reception is being remodelled and one of the itinerant doctors has finally got a "real" office, so the temp one is being emptied. Besides several unopened packets of CDRs in different drawers, and some very dated pamphlets detailing the new technologies coming to the fore (all now obsolescent) --- a highlight was a full set of Wordstar plus associated graphics/etc application install discs from 1988 (with about 15 years of dust) on the very top of a shelf. 5 1/4" single sided. I guess he's had that "temporary" office a LONG time.
Wouldn't surprise me... the "temporary" creche in a couple of knocked-through portacabins is finally moving to permanent accomodation after more decades than anyone can count, probably because the cabins are naught but rust now (NHS!)

Home:
* Digging in some boxes in the shed for spare spoons (don't ask), mum found unexpected delights in the cutlery box. Ten cassettes, including three of my favourite cassingles, and one unboxed, plus a homebrew music CD and a backup CDROM - I must have run out of last minute room for them all when coming back from uni. I've been hunting for the singles, the tape to go with my mysterious empty but labelled box, and that backup for probably a full two years now, with no clue where they were (plus I could have sworn I had a mix-disc with that set of tracks on, but never was able to scare it up - going mental!). And all it needed was for the silverwear gremlin to nick a few teaspoons :D
* Not a good one - finding where the bloody heck all the videotape labels and/or sticky tape have been hidden (women! arrrgh) after spending ten minutes finding space for something on a VHS and having the VCR flash the "protected" light at me on pressing Record..... lost the first two minutes because they'd been moved from the accessible but 2-percent-less-pretty place i'd left them. (But, it was her program anyway)
* On said tape, finding several cool old-ish adverts - the Mk5 Golf "engineering evolution" one being the best. They're all currently being wiped out by an hour of Silent Witness, but it's for the best... they were all in the middle of accidentally recorded Big Brother, Desperate Housewives, and The Simple Life (with paris hilton and christina aguilera) ... *shudder*

Now I know that, good(ish) as they are (particularly the tapes), this seriously cant be the best thing anyone on UKP has unexpectly found :)

Oh and I found a mobile speed camera on the A38, in the direction from brum to burton. I forgot that my town is directly south of staffordshire, now, didn't I...

I also found an agressive tone to my voice i thought i'd lost, during a day with a large amount of spectacularly spacky driving in it, with all other drivers seemingly aimed at writing the polo off. Including a taxi driver who almost clocked me one on a roundabout (didn't signal, thought he was going straight on instead of right, you can guess the rest) and acted as if i shot his dog when I informed him of the connection between the little stick on his steering wheel and the yellow lights found on the outside of a car... through a cloud of smoke from 4 pairs of tyres

Isn't it Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, not that I've ever sat and watched a few episodes

I was too busy fast forwarding through all the candy coloured horror until the timer said "1:00:00", while making sure nothing worthwhile was going to be scrubbed, to catch more than the briefest glimpse of the titles. Who's Nicole Richie?

Just found that my brother's PC's "standby" button is for some reason hooked up to WinXP's Shutdown command instead of doing the obvious, like what every other PC in the world does but for this one. Bang goes an attempt to save us 500 or so watts off what has been an alarmingly increased gas/electric bill, used by a computer that was doing nothing but heating up an empty room (it was toasty compared to an otherwise cool house, and i checked first the router log then his screen), replaced by a couple of days spent formulating a plausible reason for it being off (i dont know his passwords). Think I'll go with the classic "fuse box circuit breaker tripped by dodgy vacuum cleaner" ploy.
Not so much treasure, as a large box of excrement. Pleasure-pain theory?

wouldnt kick her out of bed for eating toast... but far as i heard they're both as thick and annoying as each other, so i guess her personality doesnt have sufficient funds to cover the cheques her body writes.

fun for a weekend though?

god this died on its arse didnt it, you telling me a stack of mouldy tape singles are the best thing anyone's found this year?

I can't think of anything other than about £3 I found in my car when I hoovered it a few months back, stuck down the side of the seat runners

I once found a dead cat in the garage when my folks moved to their new house. Old owners must have trapped it in by mistake...

And in all the cars I bought there's always been a pound coin in the ash tray!
