POLO 9n3 lights on 9n1

Got the new style lamps, made up loom for them, however, the brake light is a dual circuit design, anyone know why? plus because of this strange fact, when you turn side lights on, the brightest part of the dual circuit lamp comes on, my short term sulution is too put rubber over one of the contacts to take it out of circuit, and maybe common the supply to the bulb so both elements come on when i brake, any thoughts anyone?
