insurance
please can someone help me with insurance i passed my driving test in september and well i was using my mums name but know i want to make my self the main driver can anyone recommend a insurance company
You just need to shop around mate, ring round all the big names and a few of the not-so-big names too and see what they offer you. You don't mention what your car is but I would guess a 6n2 from your user name
Try Direct Line, Tesco, Elephant (has mixed results I believe, won't touch my GTi for example) and HIC for starters!
Have a look in Performance VW magazine too as there will be adverts for VAG specialist insurers and you may get a better price from them?
The bottom line is that you will have to simply call around and see what kind of quotes you get! It is definitely worth getting your policy under your own name though, even though ti costs more money to start with you will build your NCB faster (fingers crossed), the first year's NCB alone is worth something like 30% off your premium so it's all good.
Cheers

With Elephant, bare in mind the online search is default on 10month "bonus accelerator"... which means its only a 10month cover so divide by 10 times by 12 for the actual annual cost.
But its a bonus accelerator so you get your NCB in 10months, but apparently you cant take that NCB over to another insurer as they dont recognise it.
1st yr with Elephant was 900+ for 24yr old with 0 no claims, 2nd yr was £5-600 but I had to declare my 3pts which brought it up to £750 or so but played Elephant against Admiral (its sister company)
And got my cover down to some £550 with 3pts.
You can then always change to a 12month cover using your 10month NCB and then be free to move to whichever insurer... I'm assuming.

Well it wasn't so much that they point-blank wouldn't insure me, more that the quote was ridiculous! Over £2000 back when I was 23 with 4 years' NCBModifiedMadness wrote:Didi they say why they wouldn't insire your GTi? 17 yrs old, guy, getting own insurance = you may as well drop trou and bend forwards already
i stayed on my mums til i was 20 because the year on year drop in what i got quoted solo was better than anything NCB could do for me, whereas being a named driver on her car was way cheaper. by then, annual 3PFT on anything i wanted to drive was finally less than the value of the car (~£700) and so inside my feasible budget.
but, whatever you wanna do
i'll say this though - if you're going to stack a car through inexperience, or do any kind of damage (and it's near inevitable to happen, even if minor), its far better to do it to a parents motor than your own as they'll generally sort out the messy side of it and let you see how that sort of thing goes down, rather than you having to learn the hard way with your own motor.
PS student? seriously, give endsleigh a whizz, they started out as a student insurer and remain quite good. Don't let the broker run roughshod over you though, if you play the game and see if they can blag you a better deal, 9 times out of 10 you'll get it. surprised me too, but i always press for something a little better now ... let the meek and drone-minded pay the first quoted, inflated figure.
choice of car can be critical at this point though, even for third party - i'd say anything over group six you may as well forget it (at 20, i settled for group 4, hence the polo..).
PPS London? ... you're screwed
