Had a nice swimming pool of gearbox oil under the car today...selector shaft looks shiny and clean (like it would if washed by oil) so i reckon its the selector seal.
If anyone has any other ideas though please tell me.
At first it was a couple of spots on the drive but a week later and its quite a bit more.
got the new selector seal from the stealers anyway.

shaft seems to be quite a tight fit anyway (ooer) - when i tried putting a bit of grease on the new box's rod, it was all scraped straight off as soon as i tried pushing it into 3rd, leaving it "bright as a new pin" when i pulled it back to neutral.
so it might not be that
however i am stuck as to what else it might be
have a feel of the shaft and see if it's really oily? some grease would stay, i suppose, but not a great deal

Seems we were both wrong Dan...after more inspection and plenty of cleaning with a cloth the selector seal looks old but intact....when i wobbled the drivers side driveshaft in and out from where it meets the gearbox oil leaked out.
So it looks like its the driveshaft seal instead....never heard of them going but i will renew them both and the selector seal now.
*UPDATE*
I went to the stealers this morning and ordered 2 new driveshaft seals..after coming round with the smelling salts i ordered 3 bottles of their finest (better be the price they charge) gearbox oil too.
Might aswell put the new selector seal in too seen as though i already bought it.
When the car does get sold someone is gunna get a bargain with all the new stuff i buy. New tca's and poly bushes on the list next.

How much did that little lot set you back? I got all the 'box seals and some other bits from VAG Parts for £50, and the oil was about £25 for 4 bottles.metz wrote:I went to the stealers this morning and ordered 2 new driveshaft seals..after coming round with the smelling salts i ordered 3 bottles of their finest (better be the price they charge) gearbox oil too.
