The Last Tommy

Post by ModifiedMadness »

I've just sat and watched a program called The Last Tommy, about the 7 remaining survivors of World War 1, one of whom I met in 2003 under the Menin Gate in Belgium then aged 105, he died last year aged 106 - he was hoping to go back one last time but died before he got to. Did anyone else see this?

Everyone on that trip with us was in tears after meeting him, and I must admit I was close watching it again tonight. I really think it should be taught about more in schools so the younger generation can try to appreciate what sacrifices were made for them, I can't remember being told a lot at all about this at school.

Just thought I'd share that with you all and see if anyone else saw it, was a really interesting program.

I took my dad over there in 2003, it is very interesting and moving at the same time, I'd like to go again at some point as well.

I can assure you that WWI and WWII are on the national curriculum. I taught my class about WWII recently, but I think its hard for children to comprehend what happen and the sacrificies made for us. Feel free to blame teachers for every short coming in todays society though, im use to hearing it! Not much mentioned about parents, doing their job or the sh*t money we get paid for the hours we put in! Well someone has to stick up for us teachers!!

I'm not blaming the teachers mate, it's the government that makes the curriculum, I was just saying I don't remember learning much at all about the World Wars, but it is something that interests me.

I know your not, and your right! children do need to know more about the sacrifices people made for them. Would be nice to think they would become more respectful to their elders...erm doubtful!!!!

Deffinitely, it really grieves me when these poor old blokes have their houses broken into and their medals stolen  the people that do that should be castrated.

very true!! really pisses me off to see the lack of respect that the people who were there and who fought for king and country, are given by the youth!!

it should be taught more in schools, i did history a level and gcse purely becoz i found it interesting. i just wish we had done it more!!

no, that's too good.
fed - slowly - into a mincer, maybe.

or simply chucked a rifle and a tin hat & thrown out onto the front line somewhere without any training beyond how to load ammo and clear a jam, so they know how it feels... maybe get some sympathy for the multiple hells that chap went through to get his stripes.

particularly anyone who robs from a guy with a george or victoria cross
