Hi everyone, another query about my gti:
when driving along, if i push the clutch in i hear a kindof quiet whining noise that reduces in pitch as the car slows down, but eventually seems to stop if i leave the clutch depressed.
Do anybody else's gti's do this? it's not that noticeable but if i listen i can hear it, just worried that it mite be something that shouldn't be happening!
Any help appreciated just so i can check if it's meant to do this?!
cheers ears

Mine does this, I took it back to VW cause i thought the release bearing had gone in the clutch but apparently its just the powertrain. Mine doesn't do it out of gear and Its been doing it since ive had it (12 months 9k miles) so im not worried.

cheers for the reply, as far as i can hear, i think it only does it when i depress the clutch. not sure about if it does it out of gear, mite try it.
As long as it's not bad it doesn't really bother me!
this site is great for finding out and discussing our car problems!
thanks

Mine does the same. Doesn't do it when the car is out of gear. I was worried about this. My cousin is a mechanic and assures me that there is nothing wrong. Hopefully he is right.

I had this problem ... it got worse very quickly and to cut a long story short cost me £1500 for new gearbox & clutch!!!
the release bearing went followed by a string of others within the box causing the casing to be damaged!
Hope this doesn't scare you off! but worth keepin an ear out for and if push comes to shove it's cheap enough to do the release bearing.
BTW if anyone wants a new gearbox for a GTI, I have it on good authority they are scarce to say the least. I had to wait 5 months for a replacement... non available anywhere on the globe according to VW HQ! that's quality for a 5 year old car innit!

If your release bearing is faulty, it will make the noise when you press the clutch. From what you describe yours does the same as mine, low whinning sound and if u press the clutch or take it out of gear it dissapears.

If you had it fitted at a vw dealer, should have 1 year warranty on the box as Jon say's

Is anyone aware if there is a similar problem with the Lupo GTI 6-speeb gearbox? If there isn't I may just buy one. Also I think this will save me a lot of time, money and hassle in the long run.

Lupo GTi has a totally different gear box, hydraulic where the polo is cable or other way round!!
Plus not all loop GTis have 6speed!!

thats correct, Lupo is hydraulic, the polo should be too but aint.

Ok. So does that mean the Lupo gearbox doesn't suffer from these problems then?

Gearbox under 2 yr warranty from VW... replacing it after only 4 days in the car! FOC FYI.

So they should.

It depends which problem you speak of, they don't suffer from the pedal box issue, but the noise Ant43 was talkin about is normal. From what I can gather, the newer VW gearboxes are pretty pants (according to serveral VW mechanics) The mk5 polo ones are definately not the best out there.
