Hi, new to the forum. Need help regarding my 9n rear bumper

Post by mungosdad »

Hi, I'm a driving instructor and I use a 1.4tdi mk6 polo, for lessons and private use. Had the car a few months now and am very impressed with it.

I recently had a little accident with it. After droping a pupil off outside her house whilst I was reversing I hit a keep of the grass sign. I wasn't going very fast but it has torn a hole in the rear bumper about 3 inches long.
Now i dont want to make a claim on my insurance as my premiums are quite high anyway, being an instructors policy. so whats the best way (by that I mean cheapest) to get a new bumper fitted.

Any ideas on how much these things cost new or second hand? And is it fairlr simple to just whip of the old bumper and put the new one on?

Any help would be appreciated.

they come up on ebay now and again but you'l be lucky if you find one. your best bet would be a local scrap yard/car breakers. if they dont have any in im sure Euro car parts could get one but you will pay a high price for it.
somebody on here will have removed their bumper before and could give you tips on how to do it.
i removed the rear skirt on the bottom of the bumper- the black plastic strip. that was 3 screws and lots of clips that pull out with force.

Sourcing a decent second hand bumper in the right colour might be difficult. Even if you find one it might be the wrong colour so you will have to pay for it to be resprayed.

Can the bumper not be repaired? It's amazing what you can do with a bit of filler! I would take it to a bodyshop and see what they say that might be the cheapest option.

it's very simple to remove the rear bumper, you need to remove your taillights first, then undo 2 screws on each side where the taillights were. Undo the lower 3 screws on each rear wheel arch and the bumper just pulls off.

thanks for the info, I checked the one on ebay, and it looks good. I've got the diamond pearl black polo,
This one on ebay is black, so i think I should be ok as I think that was the only black VW did on that model.

Just called the guy selling it on ebay, he told me there were no scratches or any damage to the bumper, they just state slight scratches to cover themselves. So i've bought it for £35 including delivery by courrier. I should have the bumper tommorrow.

Now all I need to do is replace it with the damaged one.

Received the bumper today, its the ridght colour, metalic black. There are a few minor scratches on it but nothing very noticible.
Aynbody know if any step by step guides are available on how to change the bumper?
