Result of todays warranty work...

Brought my car in for the warranty repairs below...

* Rear washer jet inoperable
* Oil leak from engine (thankfully only a seal

)

and the following enquiries...

* Can a new ECU be fitted to increase power?

The answer was yes, they said I would expect around 7 bhp gain with a 65bhp ecu (cost around Â£250). Though they said the warranty would just disappear

Hmm, original VW part, fitted by VW retailer and the warranty disappears!! Anyway, going to speak to VW helpline to see what can be done.

* Can a the new style wiper blade be fitted WITHOUT the new motor?

Answer was again yes, so a new cap, arm and blade on order

* Can Fog lights be fitted (or is the loom there, rather?)

Forgot to pop this question again when I picked up the car, so I have to give them a call tomorrow.

Anyway, more than chuffed with the general service

Car wasn't cleaned, BUT they aren't that good anyway. Plus I like to clean my own car

New ECU.......hmmm...... It does seem very odd that it would void your warranty though.

Interesting about the ECU change!
Could you get one from somewhere else and put it in yourself? (Or is it a bit more involved than that?)

"new style wiper blade" - what do you mean by that?

ECU change does sound very interesting but don't know how applicable that is to my car. Any ideas? Mk5 1.4 8V (60bhp)

Well the only reason Nelson could put that ECU in his car is because his car is a 55bhp version of the 1.2, and they also do a 65bhp version of the 1.2, so he could get the 65bhp ECU and have 65bhp, well thats the way I understand it anyway....

So, if they made a Mk5 1.4 8V 70bhp for instance, then the likelyhood is, it is possible to put one of those in yours. But I don't know anything about the mk5 engine range, so not sure what other 1.4 8v engines they did.

This should all be taken with a pinch of salt as I am no VW mechanic!

Speedlaw, confused! Are they the sort I have already got? The long peice of rubber with no metal, as the blade?

Yup. Aero's. Made by Bosch, if I'm not mistaken. No metal, just rubber strips that wipe well.

Standard issue on all 2003 model VW's.

Even more confused now!
You say 2003 model Polo, and Nelson hasn't got them, but i have, and my car is 2002 model, 9 months old now.

tigor im running a 1.4 8V aud code in my mk5 too ive given some minor tweeks the biggest being the power system and now she pulls like a 1.6 hopefull soon ill get her on the rolers

Well, in Hollland and Germany at least, all modelyear 2003 (which starts as early as April of 2002) should have these new-style wipers. Same for Passat, Bora, Lupo and Golf. This may not apply to every country, every model or even RHD cars in general. It is however what I've gathered from my local dealership (Holland) and from the German forums.

Here's a pic of what they look like, to be sure we're talking about the same thing. Source is on the pic itself, it's a Mk4 btw, so they've been modded to fit the older car.

Yeah it is weird, perhaps he got a car that's been sitting on the lot for a while... Or something else of course. In any case, how are they? I mean, do they work well? Is it noticeable?
