rear axle problem

hi guys can anyone tell me if they have had this problen.i have a mk3 square back polo it is lowerd by 40mm .problem is the axle seems to have moved over to the nearside. i can get a finger between tyre and arch one side but not the other. what could cause this? can it be fixed?
any help would be good
