brake warning light and audio alert

Hello, just developed a problem with my 97 polo 1.4, the brake warning lamp comes on accompanied by an audio aert.

Handbrake switch seems ok, fluid level is at max and I've changed the resevoir cap in case that was causing it. If i disconnect the the electrical junction at the cap the warning light flashes and if i bridge the junction to close the circuit the warning lamp remains steady on.

The lamp lights normally while the parking prake is applied and on release the audio warning (tone, three times) is generated and the lamp flashes.

Getting Puzzled, any ideas?
