ok, anybody ever tried to...?
...put a 1.8 8v golf GTi lump into a mk.2 squareback?
basically ive bin given an 8v GTi engine, gearbox, driveshafts and even brakes (the whole lot) for nothing and im wondering if its worth having a crack at lobbing it into my baby polo or getting rid of it?
i know id have to source an ECU etc form somewhere but thats not a problem as my mate breaks GTis as a hobby ans hes got about 5.
im worried about driveshaft lengths, engine mounts etc... any ideas guys?
cheers

Hey dude....I'm also looking for info on changing the motor in my MK2....I wanted to fit a 2.0 8V long block motor but the guys say that the motor will be too high....
I think we need tofind 1 guy thats done it just for a few ideas and then all will be cool.....I really wanted to fit a 16V motor but the head looks like its gonna be way too big in that engine bay.
If you do get any info please send me some.
My e-mail address is: [email protected]
Thanks

sounds like a challenge, anybody see that belgian/dutch (dunno which) mk1 in baby blue where the guy kept the engine lid slightly open from the windscreen side just to let the new engine sit in place, id do that if i had to...
so what do you reckon, worth it for the work needed or not?
all i need to know

fraid anything above a 1.4, or a short block 1.6, hasnt a hope without heavy work upfront, or heavier work to midmount it (losing your rear seats and boot in the process). its just too big for that small, low engine bay. sorry! turbo modding the thing would probably be as effective and slightly easier... and i dont even think ive seen that done
besides as the golf is slightly wider, shafts supplied may be too long... may be able to use your existing ones if youre deadset on the idea

the main issue is not that the engine is to big, but since the larger 827 engines are leaning backwards, the axle mountings will be way ti high in the engine bay when mounting it into an 801-enigne bay, with engine placement leanings forwards.... so you would have to weld all engine mountings over again.. and the 801 transmission box does not fit the 827 engines.. do you understand ?
Just gone on ebay.de...

1k Euros.... jeeez, thats a lot of money that could be spent inserting and tuning a small block
