Hi There,
I was wandering if anyone could help me with the following questions:
1. Where does the vag-com cable plug into my GTI?
2. Which is the best vag-com cable to get?
3. Is it really as useful as people reckon for diagnosing errors?
Vag-Com Help Please!!

I can only really assist you on one of your questions...
The VAG-COM port is behind the ash-tray in your centre console. Open the lid and you can lift the ashtray out (I guess so that you can throw out your butts and ash!). Behind this you should then be able to see a purple coloured port and the cable plugs straight in.
As for cables, I've heard eBay is a good place to purchase them and the VAG-COM does have it's uses but can't say I've ever needed to use it...but if I did have it I may use it more...
Oh and welcome to the forum, just noticed this is your first post!
I'm sure the other guys that do have VAG-COM will be able to give you more advice about the necessity of the software.

Hi
Welcome to the site.
I have used Vag-com quite a bit recently.
My other half (simon) has a Leon Cupra r so he bought one to keep an eye on the boost.
To be honest, there isn't alot going on in our engines to change, apart from if you want it to beep at you when you lock it. We tried to change the autolock when you go over 20mph but it wouldnt work.
However, I recently broke my shock and it took the ABS with it. We plugged in Vag-com to see if it would tell us what was wrong and it was telling us that it was the ABS control module! but when we tested speeds of wheels and ABS sensors everything was working, so it obviously wasnt the module otherwise it wouldnt have told me that everything was working.
We ended up disconnecting the battery for 30mins and the light went away and everything was ok again.
Its really good though if a light comes on because then you dont have to waste your money at VW for them to do exactly the same thing as Vag-com can do
Simon bought his cable from ebay and has found it very useful on his car, especially after chipping it.
Cyhliu is right, it is behind your ashtray.
Hope this helps, you can always pm if you need any help. Simon checks the site as well so he can help you with any questions and with the software.
