I had the Polo on a rolling road today...

Post by Si_GTi »

... and the results are a bit poor!

I went to Shropshire Automotive just up the road from me, for an rr day set up for cruise shropshire. The results for the Polo came back and she hit 82kw on the rollers, equating to 111.6bhp

This with a Powerflow exhaust system and a BMC induction kit!

There is a possibility that the rolling road is a bit knackered though as several other cars went through at noticeably less than expected - a standard Civic Type R was recorded at 186bhp.

At the other end of the scale, a certain green Polo (MintySE) managed 68bhp from a completely boggo 1.4 8v 6n that should read at 60bhp

That sounds like an 'at the wheels' power as opposed to the 125bhp standard (at the flywheel) that vw claim. Standard power at the wheels is around 100bhp so it would probably be right. Thus around 135-140 at the flywheel.

rolling roads never seem to be that accurate. i remember dino got his car done and it came out at 86 instead of 75!
and an ibiza on seat cupra.net came in at 143 instead of the standard 130bhp!! (something lik that)
wouldn't worry too much about it Si

You can clearly see the figure of 62kw that obviously relates to the recorded wheel power.

No offence to the outfit, but it doesn't look like the most accurate set-up/result plotting I have seen.

The graph looks like it was drawn by crayon!

Where did they get the 20kw transmission loss figure from, they may well have just guessed it.

I would take those figures with a large pinch of salt.

Lupos also suffer from the same sort of transmition loss.
At the fly is always a guess, waste of time adding it to the results.

Good result though bud.

How much did you pay for the test?

Thinking of having it done to mine? Did you find out why the BHP was so low for your GTI?

Cheers

My polo went on the rollers a while back, only putting out 105bhp, at the wheels.

Totally standard, spent 200 quid at JBS and its still the same power, I think perhaps mines the VVT but still no clue.

Does your car feel slow or do you ever get beaten by lower powered cars off lights etc?

The car feels no slower now than when I first took ownership (in 2003) to be honest. I struggled to keep up with Chris & Dan and their GTi's on the way from Watford Gap to E38 at the beginning of the month but that was down to me having two passengers and them having none
