hi peeps, need abit of advice. i`ve owned a mk4 and a mk5 gti before, also a mr2 turbo. but now i want something fast and comfortable, budget is 5k or so, not sure about another VW car but was thinking the golf gti 1.8, also the v6 4motion but insurance is wayy much more then the gti lol. i want to know aswell if anyone has got a 1.8t and what mods can be done to increase power and is the engine reliable. cheers

how about a standard Leon Cupra!! 180bhp and can be got for 5k nowadays!! 1.8t 20v
common mods include Revo remap, dynatwist induction kit, Forge dv and full milltek exhaust system!!
cars have the interior out of an audi a3 and are very well put together! i had a 72k miler for a while and it was still very solid!!
make sure tho if it is a high miler that the cambelt has been changed around 60k and as with more or less any car, make sure it has a full/good service history!
hope this is of some help mate!!

the 1.8t 20v engine is a very good and reliable engine, that is why it has been used time and time again accross the vag range.
It is very tuneable, from mild - just a chip (c. 200+bhp) to wild - turbo upgrades + injectors etc.
Bill's Ibiza is based on the above engine, but is now running 450bhp !
If you plum for the golf, one thing you will need to address is the suspension - the suspension is woeful. Make sure a rear ARB is high on your mod list - even if you go for coilovers etc.
