UNBELIEVABLE?? OR NOT??

Post by beautyfiend »

I just rang up Cobornes vw in surrey and asked them to quote me a price for a cambelt change and an 80,000 mile service...
I tried not to sound shocked but he quoted me £450 for the cambelt and £380 for the service... that's £830!! And that's without finding out I need all sorts of extra work done

Anyone else think this is a bit steep or am I being a bit stupid?

Waiting for John Ashley VW to ring me back- see what price they give...
It looks like it won't be happening cos I can't afford that... Anyone want to buy a kidney??

Anyone know any good independent garages i the surrey area?

Anyone annoyed by the amount of times I've used the word 'anyone'? :)

Post some more quotes and anyone else who's had a quote for a cambelt service, as I'm looking to get the same done soon as well...but £450 sounds very extortionate.

John Ashley VW in New Malden Surrey quoted me £250 for the service and £180 for the cambelt change- How could the other VW dealer charge £270 more for the cambelt?...That's unbelievable!!

Waiting for a ringback from an independent VW specialist called Wheelbase in Hersham Surrey... Will post the quote when/if I get it (called up 40mins ago).

I was looking at around £200. Does your quote include parts and labour also is it plus VAT or included.

I've hear of Wheelbase would be interested in their quote.

Also what model have you got? mines a 1.6GL AEE engine code does it vary between models?

Shouldn't vary too much between 8v engines, they're all of a similar design I think.

I had cambelt, tensioner, water pump and coolant flush for about 180 at my local garage.

Local garage will probably be slightly cheaper than a VW specialist. I think my local VW main dealer wanted over 300 to do the cambelt alone...

Sh*t the bed!! thats expnesive, i saw in my local vw garage they were doing £400 max for all engines including 16v which is ment to be fiddly, that includes all labour parts, etc. i though that was w*nk at the time but now ive seen your quote, PHEW!!
I did mine myself, its not that hard it's just you have to take half the engine apart to get to it, but aslo you have to getting the timing right on the belt!!

i agree with mk4 bandit....... i get my god father to do all my work to my car. oil filter oil change break pads cam belt timing belt etc etc he even fitted my alarm for me to........ he know alot about cars as he built his own one recently and hes an electrician so hes handy to be around....... but like bandit said u can do it urself but u have to get the timing belt right when u put it back on otherwise ur engine will rev higher but ur car wont pick up speed. i know he didnt put it right on mine once so it didnt work so he redid it. couple of bottles of wine and hes happy. but i would say £450 for the belt takes the pee...... i wouldnt pay that....... but thats main dealers for u...... if u know a small local garage chances r theyd do it cheaper........... failing that............ if u want some work done to ur car i could speak to him and see wat he says?............ it would save u a shed load of money and he aint a cowboy so if he doesnt do it right hell redo it................. if u want to let me know and i'll speak to him.......... i live in aldershot hampshire......

Booked it in.

Just booked the car into a local garage (Palace Garage in Surbiton, Surrey). They quoted me £170 for the service and £152 for the cambelt- both for £349 inc VAT all parts and labour etc...which I'm happy with.
I don't know much about the garage to be honest but I drive past it everyday and it's always totally full- all types of cars from old minis to new range rovers so... Fingers crossed

I would of liked a quote from Wheelbase but rang them monday luchtime and they haven't got back to me yet. Rang yesterday thinking maybe they'd forgot and the bloke said they get asked for loads of quotes a day and he'd get back to me later that day... He didn't and I can't really afford to wait around cos I've got tickets to the man utd/everton match on the 29th and I need the car to get up there.:D

It's booked in for Tuesday 21st- can't wait really, I've been getting a bit jumpy recently about the cambelt just randomly breaking.

Right, going to watch the England match down the pub...
