MK5 Courtesy Light

Drove my friend's Mk5 16V at the weekend (much quieter and more solid than a Mk4 btw.)

I noticed, however, that it didn't have a courtesy light delay feature - I thought this was standard on Mk5's?

Does the GTI have it?

Yeah, my mk5 16v has this feature, and is mentioned in the handbook.

'On vehicles equipped with central locking, the interior light is switched on for approx. 20 seconds when the vehicle is unlocked, a door opened or the ignition key removed.

The switch for the interior light must be in the door contact position for this function.

It is however switched off as soon as the vehicle is locked or the ignition switched on.'

Yes, unfortunately Mk4 Polos were a bit lacking in the creature comforts area, however I managed to fit a light delay relay from a SAAB 9000 into my car so I have that feature now!

@ Mercato: What year is your Mk5? My friend's is a 2000 X-Reg. His interior light basically just comes on when you open the door and switches off when you close it. It doesn't come on when you unlock the doors before opening them, and it doesn't come on when the key is removed from the ignition. Presumably there is only three switch positions for the interior light:

1: Door contact
2: Permanently on
3: Permanently off

I guess that if your mates car has not got central locking, then the delay function will not work on it.

His car is exactly the same as yours - a Sept 2000 Polo 16V.

Does yours have a factory fitted alarm? I wonder if that's something to do with it, as his doesn't have an alarm.

Having said that, the quote that you gave from the handbook only mentions that the car had to be fitted with c/locking, it doesn't say anything about an alarm.

It must be part of the alarm then, seems strange though, as I thought it would have just been the c/locking that controlled it.

My sister has this feature on her Mini Cooper and it doesn't have an alarm.

I developed a circuit a while back that does that, it also comes on when you remote unlock and when you turn off the ignition. Its a microprocessor based solution, but you can build it on a bit of veroboard. The trick is fitting it.

Sorry to bump old post, but JWC got any info on your circuit, what components I need and a circuit diagram? Also for fitting?

I'd like mine to have this dimming delay, mine just goes on and off with the door opening/closing

has central locking (not factory remote, well its remote now using votex kit), no vw alarm

perhaps its an option in vag-com ??
